• “Open Access is the free, immediate, online
availability of research articles coupled with
the rights to use these articles fully in the
digital environment. Open Access ensures that
anyone can access and use these results—to
turn ideas into industries and breakthroughs
into better lives.”

Ways authors can provide open access:
• self-archiving their journal articles in an open
access repository, also known as 'green' open
access, or
• publishing in an open access journal, known as
'gold' open access but with the payment of an
APC
• *Hybrid Open access
• Or Use Academic Social Networks/ VREs

5. Virtual Research
Environments (VREs)
• Online systems helping researchers
collaborate.
• Features usually include collaboration support
(Web forums and wikis), document hosting,
and some discipline-specific tools, such as
data analysis, visualisation, or simulation
management.

6. VREs defined
According to JISC:
• VRE is a set of online tools and other network
resources and technologies interoperating
with each other to support or enhance the
processes of a wide range of research
practitioners within and across disciplinary
and institutional boundaries.

• EVER-EST, a VRE for research on Earth-science,
• VRE4EIC, supporting a multi-disciplinary
approach to research on climate change and
energy sustainability
