Hand Rolled Applicative User ValidationCode KataPhilip Schwarz
Could you use a simple piece of Scala validation code (granted, a very simplistic one too!) that you can rewrite, now and again, to refresh your basic understanding of Applicative operators <*>, <*, *>?
The goal is not to write perfect code showcasing validation, but rather, to provide a small, rough-and ready exercise to reinforce your muscle-memory.
Despite its grandiose-sounding title, this deck consists of just three slides showing the Scala 3 code to be rewritten whenever the details of the operators begin to fade away.
The code is my rough and ready translation of a Haskell user-validation program found in a book called Finding Success (and Failure) in Haskell - Fall in love with applicative functors.

2. Hello!
I am Matt Avery
Today I’ll be giving a quick update on some
of the recent development projects we are
working on relating to Virtual Races.
2
3. Today’s Topic: Updates to
Virtual Results Dashboard
Additional Resources to Review:
▷ Transition to a Virtual Race Webinar & How-To’s: Covers basics of
virtual races, postponement tool overview, and participant management
options
▷ Virtual Result Webinar: Zooms in on the setup of virtual results
▷ Postponement Tool Webinar & How-To’s: The ins and outs of using the
postponement tool
▷ RaceJoy for Virtual: Using RaceJoy for a more interactive virtual race
3
All additional resources will be emailed in follow-up, and can be found at runsignup.com/coronavirus
4. Enhanced Virtual Results
4
❖ We’ve updated our Dashboard screens for the Enhanced Virtual Results setup making it easier for
you to let Participants submit their own results for Virtual Races.
5. Enhanced Virtual Race Landing Page
Updates
5
❖ On the Enhanced Virtual Race setup screen it is now
much easier to see what you can do with the Virtual
Events you have setup for your Race.
❖ You have the option to request enhanced features for
any Virtual Events you have set up.
❖ You can also edit the settings for any existing Virtual
Events that have been enhanced.
❖ On this screen you will also be able to easily determine
which Events are enhanced and of those, which have
the additional TXT features enabled.
6. Adding and editing Enhanced Virtual
Race Settings for an Event.
6
❖ We’ve converted the Enhanced Features setup screen
to a full-screen view. This allows you to focus on
what’s important in this setup and reduces the
clutter of the rest of the dashboard while you’re
working on this.
❖ There are now some points at the top of the page that
give some clear instructions on the approval process
and bib number assignment.
❖ We have decided to remove the $1 additional
processing fee for Virtual TXT features! 🎉🎉🎉
7. What’s next for the Dashboard?
7
❖ We’re working on making it even easier to set up Enhanced Virtual Events in a few ways.
○ Pre-filling in the TXT Message Keyword based on the Race Name
○ Pre-selecting and automatically naming the Result Set based on the Event Name.
○ Suggesting Result Submission Start and “Until” dates.
○ Giving you a preview of the messages that will go out.
9. Improving Results Submission
9
We are currently working on improving the experience for users when submitting results in a couple of
ways.
❖ Allowing RaceJoy users to submit their results directly from within the app. - Will be available in an
update by Tuesday 4/21.
❖ Updating the setup for Enhanced Virtual Races to allow participants in “linked” Events to submit their
results to multiple Enhanced Virtual Events. For example if you have “bundle” type Events that need to
submit results to multiple Events from one registration.
10. What’s next?
10
We have a lot of great ideas about how to make the Virtual Race experience
better! There are a few projects that are on deck for us.
❖ Allow users to submit photos along with their times.
❖ Teams and Splits support.
❖ Total distance based results support.
❖ Submit GPS track for results.
❖ Third Party integrations for result submission.
