Whirlpool EMEA presents: Digital School, Lesson 5: What is a UGC?
In this lesson, we explain how the methods of use and the production of content has completely changed over the last few years.
People as passive spectators have become producers of content: everyone has access to a camera and software for the in-house development of multimedia content. The explosion of platforms such as YouTube, Flickr and Instagram, etc. ... has enabled everyone to become a content maker.
The contents of the web are often remixed or characterized by fads that follow an unstoppable collective stream. This stream produces new content out of old, which inevitably impacts on the life of the brands.
Following the advent of “digital”, it’s my opinion that the things people think have changed haven’t, but some things have changed that aren’t yet widely understood.
The digital age disrupted the music world, ushering in a new era for fans, artists, retailers and other key stakeholders. This year, we got a clearer glimpse of what the second decade of digital music will look like—and it’s quite different from the first in many ways. In our Things to Watch: Music Edition, we chart what’s changing from both a macro and micro perspective.
Whirlpool presents the volume 2 of the Digital School. Lesson 4 is dedicated to storytelling and how to create interesting content for your audience, in order to stay relevant in a crowded landscape.
Technology Trends | How Technology Impacts Our LivesHellocomputer
A trends report looking at how technology has changed our lives and business in recent years. From Uber and Airbnb and other sharing economies, to smart cities and crowdsourcing, the Internet and new technology has made a significant impact on how we function in our society.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Connector Corner: Automate dynamic content and events by pushing a buttonDianaGray10
Here is something new! In our next Connector Corner webinar, we will demonstrate how you can use a single workflow to:
Create a campaign using Mailchimp with merge tags/fields
Send an interactive Slack channel message (using buttons)
Have the message received by managers and peers along with a test email for review
But there’s more:
In a second workflow supporting the same use case, you’ll see:
Your campaign sent to target colleagues for approval
If the “Approve” button is clicked, a Jira/Zendesk ticket is created for the marketing design team
But—if the “Reject” button is pushed, colleagues will be alerted via Slack message
Join us to learn more about this new, human-in-the-loop capability, brought to you by Integration Service connectors.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Gopi also has a strong connection with our customers, leading design and architecture for strategic implementations. Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

22. It is about how the introduction of Shared Media with Viewer 2.0 has changed how we will utilize Customer Support Publishing Presentations Graphics Applications Video Music Social Media Gaming Storefronts Marketing Education Communication Everything...
23. But just as we've taken the time to learn about where the future is taking us... we also must understand where the past has advised us. The Future of Communications and Virtual Environments still have a long way to go in order to catch up to the wisdom and understanding of those that came before us...
25. The prior slide is a fresh reminder of what happened recently concerning the entire Second Life Grid, XstreetSL, Support Portals, and even the main Second Life Website. Tens of thousands of users were suddenly, and without warning, ejected from the virtual environment. Transactions came to a halt. Movement was severely restricted for those that managed to remain logged in. Intellectual Property in virtual inventories suddenly disappeared. An economy estimated to be worth US$567 million came to a standstill in a matter of minutes .
26. That's not to say we should PANIC and walk away ...
27. To the contrary ... virtual environments and social media have so much to offer that the risks inherent with this growth are far outweighed by the benefits we gain from striving to make it better. Unfortunately, many today who can make the biggest impact fail to see the potential and instead refuse to have anything to do with Viewer 2.0
28. “ I've heard nothing but bad things about Viewer 2.0 – and since most of my readers use Emerald, I have no reason to look into potential uses for shared media until there are enough people using it to justify my involvement.” Frolic Mills Best of SecondLife Magazine
29. It's better to embrace new technology and find innovative ways to put it to use for your benefit than to wait until everyone else is doing it. This is what makes the best in this industry what they are. They can spot potential well ahead of the masses, and they are the first to adopt it. In the future of communications, you can't afford to wait. Those who hesitate miss the opportunity to command the future.
30. The future is Ubiquitous Communications . It's the end of the walled garden mentality. It's when you send a tweet from Second Life, and it shows up on the web. It's when the rest of the world replies to that tweet and you see it in-world. It's when your message is everywhere, reaching everyone, regardless of where, how or who. It's when the virtual world and the real world combine in real time, and you see a global audience, regardless of the medium used. The future is not measured in hours, days, weeks or years... It's measured in seconds.
32. “ The first area to investigate involves the elimination of the centralized backend . The backend is a communications and processing bottleneck that will not withstand growth above too large a size. While we can support tens of thousands of users with this model, it is not really feasible to support millions . Making the system fully distributed, however, requires solving a number of difficult problems. The most significant of these is the prevention of cheating.” Lessons Learned From Lucasfilm's Habitat - 1990
33. We still have a long way to go before we see a proper system in place to facilitate a full Metaverse. Second Life is not currently capable of being that system, but with our help and support, it will be. This is why we bring this presentation to you, utilizing shared media via a product we have designed specifically to support this paradigm shift. We support the future, and ask that you join us in making that future the best that it possibly can be.
