3. VINITI was founded in 1952 by Russian Academy of
Sciences (RAS);
Since that time, the leading information center is in former
Soviet Union (USSR), and now in Russia and CIS countries
;
Today it is one of the main producers of scientific and
technical information in the world;
It produces the information products in print and electronic
forms.

4. Currently, there are about 400 research institutes affiliated to the
Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS);
Of these, VINITI occupies a special place as a leading agency in
information processing;
VINITI’s main goal was to facilitate access to world achievements in
science and technology for the USSR research and engineering
community;
To implement this task, VINITI had to process, publish and disseminate
comprehensive information related to basic and applied research;
To expand the Institute’s activity and to ensure variety of its tasks, the
Government reorganized it into the All-Union Institute for Scientific and
Technical Information in 1955.

5. VINITI began to process scientific literature and to publish
Journal Abstracts (JA) from 1953;
Its publications were used by a variety of research
institutions, design bureaus and industrial enterprises;
The main task of the Institute is to provide researchers,
designers and engineers with information on the latest
achievements in science and technology around the world;
To produce the information products and services on the
basis of world and Russian scientific & technical
publications.

6. VINITI collects & creates abstracts and stores all scientific and
technical materials which were not published anywhere
(deposited manuscripts, dissertations, etc.);
VINITI develops software for advanced information processing
(For example search engines, automatic translation systems,
intellectual indexing and abstracting systems, etc.);
It also provides information services on the basis of own and
foreign information products and literature collections in print
and electronic forms.

7. VINITI is functioning as the central USSR repository
and clearing house for scientific and technical
information,
It coordinates thousands of Documentation and
Information Centres with a highly complex central
organization utilizing the service of hundreds of
specialists and thousands of abstractors & translators
under the following well-defined units:

abstracts, summaries and bibliography of scientific and
technical primary publications;
Sources from 130 countries in 66 languages;
Includes 70% - foreign documents, 30% - Russian
documents;
Consists of 28 summary subject volumes with 208
sections, each of which is issued independently as well,
plus 41 subject sections not included in summary
volumes.
