Concept
Video conferencing is a system
that enables people in various
places around the world to have
a meeting by seeing and hearing
each other on a screen
• Videoconferencing (or video
conference) means to conduct a
conference between two or more
participants at different sites by
using computer networks to
transmit audio and video data.
• For example, a point-to-point (two-
person) video conferencing system
works much like a video telephone
and at present we all are in a
videoconferencing system.
Meaning
HowitWorks
Video conferencing allows people at
two or more locations to see and hear
each other at the same time, using
computer and communications
technology.
They exchange visual information with
Webcams (digital video cameras) and
streaming video.
Audio content may be distributed via
computer or the telephone system.
Equipments
Needed
Displays:
laptop, desktop monitor, television,
mobile screen.
Microphones and cameras:
built-in microphones and webcams, USB
microphones and webcams are utilized.
Speakers: built-in computer speaker,
external speaker, VoIP (voice over IP)
conferencing phone.
Internet Connection: WiFi, HotSpot etc.
major 5 types of video conference systems are as follows:

Types:

1.
Tele-presenceVideo
ConferencingSystem
Tele-presence is designed to host a
meeting as closely as possible. Even if
the participants are not in the same
room physically, the set-up is done in a
way easily.
Large screens are used and cameras are
positioned at eye level.
The result is a videoconference set-up
that appears as if all the participants are
sitting in the same room and around the
same table.
2.
IntegratedVideo
ConferencingSystem
Integrated video conferencing
systems are designed generally for
group videoconferencing where
there's a centralized location for the
equipment. It include both the
hardware and codec.
All the main camera, displays and
other peripheral videos are mounted
in the main conference location.
Integrated video conferencing
systems are typically ideal for
boardroom and classroom
conferences in offices and
educational institutions those having
these facilities.
3.
DesktopVideo
ConferencingSystem
As an important one of types of video
conferencing systems, desktop video
conferencing system is very popular with
people on-the-go and typical office
workers and educationists.
Within this option there are two choices
available: a software client on your
desktop or a hardware codec that
doubles as your computer monitor.
By using this type of set-up, the video
conferencing system is brought right into
your personal computer while still
pulling off a full-motion conference.
4.
Service-basedVideo
ConferencingSystem
For serviced-based systems, the
provider, which often is a telecom
carrier, handles majority of the
control when it comes to the network
set-up.
This means less work on your end.
You just pay for the solution and your
provider manages it for you making
more convenient especially if you
don't want to bother with the
technicalities.
For example: Springer Nature and
others using Cisco Webex
professional
5.
CODEC
A codec is a device or computer
program which encodes or decodes a
digital data stream or signal. Codecs are
used in videoconferencing, streaming
media, and video editing applications.
This alternative is the most like a room-
based Video conferencing framework in
that it utilizes an outside display, camera
and microphone, which is the same as
does a framework for your meeting
room.
Its very costly, ranges in cost from $1500
to $8000 (1.13-6lakhs) in addition to
yearly charges for authorizing and
upkeep.
Normally utilized in Big business
houses.
• Video conferencing helps to
improve communication and re-
establish relationships with the
stakeholders.
• During a video conference you get
to see the body language and
facial expressions of the
participants.
• This leads to a more effective and
faster collaboration between the
individuals and institutions.
Importance
• Reduced Travel Time and Costs.
• Optimised Attendance.
• Structured Meetings/classes with
Improved Communications.
• Increased Productivity.
• Employee/Students Retention.
• Sustained Competitive Advantages.
Benefits
• A high bandwidth communication link is
required to transmit and receive high
quality images.
• There is a short time lag between
speaking and receiving a response that
can disrupt the natural flow of a
conversation.
• High quality dedicated video-
conferencing systems are expensive to
buy but now in the era of COVID-19
lockdown many are providing free access
for restricted time limit.
