Beelders Using Vision And Voice To Create A Multimodal Interface For Microsof...Kalle
There has recently been a call to move away from the standard WIMP type of interfaces and give users access to more intuitive
interaction techniques. Therefore, it in order to test the usability of a multimodal interface in Word 2007, the most popular word processor, the additional modalities of eye gaze and speech recognition were added within Word 2007 as interaction techniques.
This paper discusses the developed application and the way in which the interaction techniques are included within the
well-established environment of Word 2007. The additional interaction techniques are fully customizable and can be used in
isolation or in combination. Eye gaze can be used with dwell time, look and shoot or blinking and speech recognition can be
used for dictation and verbal commands for both formatting purposes and navigation through a document. Additionally, the
look and shoot method can also be combined with a verbal command to facilitate a completely hands-free interaction. Magnification of the interface is also provided to improve accuracy and multiple onscreen keyboards are provided to provide hands free typing capabilities.

Microsoft Unified Communications - Network Considerations for Microsoft ODS D...Microsoft Private Cloud
Enterprises that are adopting unified communications (UC) platforms such as Microsoft Office Communication Server (OCS) must carefully consider and plan how UC will affect their LAN and WAN infrastructures, as well as how their networks may either hinder or improve the
performance of a UC solution. Everything from bandwidth considerations, to firewall topology, to end-user habits and experiences must be taken into consideration. If done correctly, enterprises can realize great productivity gains with new levels of collaboration, both internally and with external parties. Reduction of WAN and LAN infrastructure, built to maximum capacity in support of past IP telephony or voice/data convergence efforts, can also reduce costs and lessen management complexity in the long run.

Future plans involve further adoption of new technologies and formats.
This document summarizes an evaluation report on online video-conferencing products and services by Athabasca University. Ten software products and online services were reviewed according to criteria like video clarity, synchronization, and screen size scalability. Most free products had problems with reliability of video and audio transmission quality. Paid server-based software could also experience issues like audio lag on slower connections. The report concludes that online video may not always be necessary for educational conferencing and cautions distance educators to consider student internet access when using such tools.
This document discusses how enterprise video conferencing is now ready for mainstream adoption due to technological advances and the convergence of video and IP telephony. It provides an overview of customer requirements for video conferencing solutions, describes a joint video conferencing solution from Avaya and Polycom that addresses these requirements, and provides an example of how this solution helped a financial institution improve their video conferencing capabilities.

The document discusses various topics related to unified communications and collaboration technologies. It examines the challenges of choosing a unified communications solution for an organization. While the vision of a single unified user interface is appealing, in reality compatibility issues between different vendors' platforms still exist. Cloud-based solutions are helping to address these challenges by providing reliable access to content and applications from any location. The article also outlines different options for an organization's unified communications solution, such as keeping it internal, outsourcing, using a hosting solution, or a hybrid approach. Ultimately, the best solution depends on an organization's specific needs and strategy for adoption and integration of new technologies.
Delivering a UC Experience - Migration vs. IntegrationWainhouse Research
A well-implemented and fully-adopted UC solution delivers benefits to end users, IT teams, and the enterprise alike. Of course, the terms “well-implemented” and “full-adopted” are more often found in UC roadmaps and strategy presentations, and less often in live production environments. This SlideShare provides a comparison between two common approaches to UC deployment: Migration vs Integration. Our goal is to challenge the traditional approach, and investigate a potentially faster path to a fully unified user experience – without risk to the end user, the IT team, or the business.
The University of New South Wales (UNSW) responded to a student from Sultan Qaboos University who was asking for information about distance learning programs at UNSW for a research paper. UNSW informed the student that they offer a broad range of degrees through distance learning and provided links to information about UNSW's high rankings in Australia and the world, as well as their distance learning programs page.
Video conferencing allows for two-way audio and video communication between multiple locations but it has some drawbacks. It is not easy for learners to access and use due to technical issues they may face. The technology also has a high cost structure due to the various devices needed like cameras, microphones, and routers. For a 1.5 hour session, costs can range from $448 to $468 per student. While content can be easily adapted, learners need training to effectively use video conferencing since it may present difficulties for their learning.
The study found no significant differences in achievement between online and traditional students. However, online students had higher dropout rates early in the semester due to technology hurdles, while attrition was more gradual for in-person students. Potential reasons for higher online attrition included students not adjusting to self-paced learning, courses being more rigorous than anticipated, and a lack of experience with the online format among both students and faculty.
The document discusses different camera modes for digital cameras. It explains that professional DSLR cameras focus more on manual modes while consumer point-and-shoot cameras focus on automatic modes. The four main modes are: Program (P) mode which automatically controls shutter speed and aperture; Aperture priority (A or Av) which allows manual control of aperture; Shutter priority (S or Tv) which allows manual control of shutter speed; and Manual (M) mode which requires manually setting both shutter speed and aperture. Together with options for manually or automatically controlling ISO, there are eight possible combinations of manual and automatic settings.

Movi has been used successfully in educational institutions to increase interaction between students located in different areas and allow collaboration on projects remotely. Some of its key benefits include easy installation, intuitive interface, and support for sharing presentations to enhance distance learning experiences.
The document discusses different camera modes including manual, aperture priority, shutter priority, and program modes. It defines each mode and the level of photographer control over aperture, shutter speed, and ISO in each mode. Examples of photographs taken with different modes are provided and an activity is included to help students understand and use the various camera modes.
This document provides an overview of distance education and defines key terms. It discusses the history of distance education and how technology has enabled new forms of remote learning. Distance education is defined as education where students learn remotely and communicate with instructors and peers through electronic means instead of attending class in-person. The document outlines how distance education has evolved over time as new technologies were developed.

2. These days there is no limitation to communicate to
anyone from anywhere and anytime, which mean
flexibility and accessibility of development. For instance,
imagine that you are a student who do not want to
attend the class for some constrains that resist you, how
you are going to communicate?! Movi allow you to solve
the problem .
Movi is software that offers a cost-effective, easy to use
video solution ,allowing people to use personal VC to
connect to colleagues and clients in either a point-to-
point or multi point VC call using PC or laptop units.
Importantly, Movi is a standards based
videoconferencing solution which is interoperable with
Videolinq’s existing site based VC units, network
bridging infrastructure, telecommunications formats and
network management tools that make up the 100+ site
Videolinq network. In addition to a PC or Macintosh
(available in Movi version 4), users require an Internet
connection, camera, microphone and speakers. Movi
converts any PC or Mac into a business-quality video
system providing the user with the ability to interpret
facial expressions, body language and voice intonation
allowing organizations to achieve high levels of personal
communication over distance and accelerate decision
making processes. Movi can be used on an internal
private network or via external Public IP network across
the internet. Participant numbers using the external
mode are dependent on the necessary availability of
external ports on associated network infrastructure.
The objectives of using it is to:
-allow student-teacher, student-student to communicate
to each other.
-allow students and teacher to produce creative work
from anywhere .
- to easily extend the benefits of videoconferencing to
everyone.
-allow multiple people to engage over distance.

4. Advantages of Movi:
-enables PC users with a webcam to join an enterprise-
wide video-conferencing network.
- communicate visually with colleagues for enhanced
productivity from anywhere they need to work .
-makes it possible to easily extend the benefits of
videoconferencing to everyone.
-Movi enables IT professionals to rapidly deploy PC-
based video conferencing to the entire organization.
-Presenting computer graphics quickly and easily is
critically important to most distance education events.
The OCS client cannot send or receive computer
graphics at higher than 320x240 (webcam resolution)
when connected to the IU video bridge. The Movi client
and the IU Video Bridge supports BFCP for computer
graphics presentation, so that Movi users can send and
receive high-resolution computer graphics when in a
conference on the IU Video Bridge.
-Movi installs relatively quickly. Our experience thus far
is that most users download, install, sign in, and are
connected to their first conference in under three
minutes.
-Movi proved easy to use; it allowed efficient resolution -
in the decision-making process as data can be shared
and appropriate changes made by all participants in the
meeting thus promoting collaboration between members
and group ownership of the decision rather than passing
it off as someone else’s responsibility.
Limitation of Movi:
-The primary risk (as with all desktop videoconferencing
software solutions) is that we have no control over the
particular idiosyncrasies of the Movi user's machine, or
the network segment from which the user will connect.
-limited control over the videoconferencing experience
from user to user and session to session.
5. -Using the keyboard for DTMF input does not work in
Movi 3.0.
-When distributing the Movi upgrade, only HTTP(S)
URLs should be used as the software upgrade URL in
TMS. Linking to a file share may cause Movi to become
temporarily unresponsive.
-Due to application-specific support for Windows APIs,
not all applications can be shared with Movi at this time.
Platforms known to cause presentation sharing issues in
Movi include Adobe AIR and GTK+.
-Due to BFCP implementations on MPS and MCU, Movi
may not be able to send duo video without interworking.
To force VCS interworking, disable SIP registrations on
the MPS or MCU.
-Have to install software.Requires hardware for video
and audio echo cancellation(or headsets).
How does it support learning:
Each learner has his own needs, interests, learning
styles so they are different, Movi enables individuals at
their desktops with the full functionality and advantages
previously limited to room-based VC environments.
Student can share their information so it can serve
collaboration, communication and interaction between
them. Additionally it increases individual and group
efficiency as the message or decision can be inclusive of
all parties simultaneously rather than making contact
with individuals repeatedly for additional clarification
before a consensus is able to be reached. Also student
can personalize their response and get reinforcement for
it.
Examples of usage :
(1) SINGAPORE, Dec. 9 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Today, TANDBERG
announced new advanced capabilities for Movi, its business-quality PC
video solution, for collaboration without boundaries. Movi delivers the
total package for mobile video collaboration by coupling the ability to
6. share content with its already best-in-class video and audio capabilities
and centralized management.
"This Movi upgrade delivers a series of exciting and critical new capabilities
that add significant value to the TANDBERG mobility solution," said Ira
Weinstein, analyst and partner at Wainhouse Research. "Movi's new user
interface makes it easier to use and more intuitive for users. However, the key
enhancement is the ability to share PC content with other session
participants. This new capability allows Movi users to not only participate in,
but also to host high impact, rich media collaboration sessions."
(2) ccording to Michael Young, Director of Telemedicine at the University
of North Carolina Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, Movi has
enabled physicians and patients from all over North Carolina to
connect and collaborate with doctors at the Cancer Center, resulting in
greater patient care.
"Movi is an integral part of our video solution and enables our doctors to
collaborate using their PCs no matter their geographic location," said Young.
"Now, with the added capability of standards based content sharing on Movi,
our physicians can collaborate at an even higher level than before; sharing
documents and applications from the field while engaging in face-to-face
communications. The end result is a higher level of care for our patients
across the entire state and a level of collaboration that was not possible
before without significant and time consuming travel."
(3) A request was made by Brisbane North Institute of TAFE (BNIT) to trial
Movi 3 software in an effort to reduce the ever increasing travel time
spent by BNIT staff who are regularly required to travel between
campuses – in some instances a 100 kilometre round trip - within one
of the largest (geographically) metropolitan TAFE Institutes. In addition
to decreasing travel time, it is anticipated that Movi usage will increase
the level of work commitment and individual productivity among trial
participants due to time savings realised through a reduction in the
disruption of workflow, a reduction in the misinterpretation of key
communications and the opportunity for immediate confirmation of
information. It is anticipated that the enhanced personal communication
clarity and immediacy of contact and information sharing that is
afforded by Movi will contribute to the creation of a new level of
cohesion and collaborative decision making among trial participants.
Trial strengths that BNIT state : a number of trail participants
Movi'spersonalised video provides the undisputed advantage of
meeting over distance in a face to face environment. Movi enables
individuals at their desktops with the full functionality and advantages
7. previously limited to room-based VC environments. Real time
interactive video communication allows users to experience the human
elements involved in working with others. From a participant
perspective Movi proved easy to use; it allowed efficient resolution in
the decision-making process as data can be shared and appropriate
changes made by all participants in the meeting thus promoting
collaboration between members and group ownership of the decision
rather than passing it off as someone else’s responsibility.
And the weakness of movi as BNIT state : the use of Movi requires an
initial degree of operational training and support in order to deliver
quality audio visual user experiences. Users have different
expectations and understandings of Movi usage parameters. Degraded
user experience was often associated with unrealistic user
understandings of the limitations of the Movi platform. This was evident
in the use of inappropriate outdoor and other environments which
produced unacceptable ambient and wind noise levels and visual
environments with either extreme or limited lighting availability or
excessive visual clutter that affected the visual quality of the user
experience.
