Viaphone is a low-noise asphalt mix designed for urban roads to reduce traffic noise and improve safety. It combines exceptional acoustic and skid resistance properties by using a special formulation that includes fibers. When applied in a thin layer of 20-40mm, it can halve perceived road traffic noise and provides high skid resistance. Long-term testing has shown it maintains its acoustic performance over time.
2. VIAPHONE®
LOW-NOISE THIN SURFACE COURSE
As automobile traffic increases in urban areas, noise generated by vehicle traffic has become an
increasing nuisance and a growing concern. Road traffic noise abatement has therefore become
a major priority.
Viaphone® is a low-noise mix designed to meet urban requirements. It is one of the products
developed by Eurovia to meet the new expectations of those living in the vicinity of roads and of
road users with respect to noise abatement and more broadly to environmental protection.
Viaphone® is an innovation that combines exceptional acoustic and skid resistance properties.

formula
Viaphone® efficiently and sustainably combats
rolling noise pollution generated by vehicle traffic.
It has a lower risk of long-term silting up than
porous asphalt. Based on its intrinsic properties,
it is a surfacing of choice for construction and
maintenance of urban and suburban pavements:
streets, thoroughfares, highway access routes,
roundabouts, etc.
In addition to comfort and safety, Viaphone® offers
a uniform surface and a fine, aesthetically pleasing
mosaic. In urban works, since it is applied in a thin
layer it requires no manhole leveling and presents
limited joint problems.
VIAPHONE
RECOGNISED FOR
ITS PERFORMANCE
Viaphone® was selected by the Direction
des Routes as part of the Road Innovation
Charter. The report on projects carried out
in that context stated that the objectives
of “reducing rolling noise and improving
skid resistance” were achieved.
The certificate has been delivered in 1996.
A French Technical Opinion was also issued
for Viaphone® which was the industry’s
first low-noise surfacing to be covered.
e
xcellence,
ACROSS THE BOARD
Viaphone® has a 0/6 gap-graded 2/4 mineral
structure with a high percentage of 4/6 chips, giving
it a very coarse particle size distribution curve.
An appropriate tack coat – using a modified
bituminous emulsion for heavy traffic - waterproofs
the substrate and contributes to the surfacing’s
tangential shear resistance. The use of a special
rapid and controlled breaking emulsion keeps
the site and its surroundings clean. Light gritting
together with a conventional emulsion achieves the
same result; a paver with integrated spray bar can
also be used.
BINDEr PARTICULARS
The binder used is generally pure
bitumen with an addition of organic
fibres. Depending on traffic and loading,
it can also be selected from the range of
polymer-modified binders developed by
Eurovia
Polybitume® P is covered by a French
Technical Opinion.
The relatively high binder content
improves the workability of Viaphone® and
facilitates its application.
4. ACOUSTIC COMFORT IS ENHANCED
The special formulation, which includes fibres, lends Viaphone® its low rolling noise and high skid resistance
properties. The acoustic performance of Viaphone® also stands out as a result of its stability over time.
greater safety
The low size range of the chips used in Viaphone®
reduces the noise induced by the impact of vehicle
tyres on rough pavement surfaces. Fibres primed
with bitumen act as an «acoustic damper». Rolling
noise measurements have been carried out on a
variety of road sections laid with Viaphone® using
the «controlled vehicle» procedure from
the «In situ characterisation of roadway surfacing
acoustic quality» standard.
