HIGH-PERFORMANCE SAND ASPHALT
Road construction engineering doctrine in France distinguishes between the structural role

Microvia® is a modified binder based sand asphalt with 0/6mm 2/4 gap grading developed by
Eurovia for surface courses. The solution offers both comfort and performance.

ROM THE ROAD TO
THE MOTORWAY:
A PROCESS WITH MANY
APPLICATIONS
Microvia® can be employed in a wide variety of
projects. The surfacing can be used on all properly
designed pavements and withstands all types of
traffic on both urban streets and country roads. Its
excellent skid resistance properties at all speeds
ensure safety for motorists. Microvia® is the
surfacing of choice for pavements with high-speed
traffic such as national highways, expressways and
motorways.
Microvia® is also much appreciated in suburban
and urban areas thanks to its low rolling noise
properties, which changes little with age, and to its
very aesthetic appearance, which is due to the small
size of the aggregates used.
The performance of Microvia® accounts for its
success; millions of square metres have been
applied in France since 1984 and many projects
have been carried out in a large number of other
European countries.

The surfacing’s excellent macrotexture is
characterised by its average texture depth ATD
(EN 13036-1 standard) when new, which is always
greater than 0.8 mm. The surfacing more than
meets the specification of the skid resistance
Circular No. 2002-39 of 16 May 2002 in both urban

EVERY DETAIL COUNTS

mix design
Microvia® is always laid over a tack coat, which
is most often a modified bitumen emulsion. This
waterproofs the substrate and ensures the excellent
bonding on which the long service life of the surface
course depends. Two types of Microvia® are offered.
They differ in the thickness in which they are laid.
The qualities of Microvia® are the result of the
combination of a specific grading and a polymermodified bitumen.
Very Thin Layer Asphaltic Concrete (VTLAC),
20 to 30mm thickness
Microvia® UM
Asphalt for Ultra Thin Layer (AUTL),
10 to 20mm thickness
Microvia® TM meets the requirements of the
EN 13108-2 Class 1 and Class 2 very thin asphalt
layer concrete standard.
The aggregates are chosen according to the
EN 13043 Aggregates for bituminous mixes
standard and meet the requirements of the
EN 13108-2 standard. A high percentage of 4/6
crushed chips and a low dose rate of 0/2mm
crushed fines result in a gap graded curve and a
very coarse asphalt mix.
The Microvia® binder is selected from the
Polybitume® range of polymer modified bitumens
developed by Eurovia or from the Styrelf® binder
range.
The various degrees of modification offered by the
Polybitume® range of binders makes it possible
to match the binder to the specific requirements
of each project according to the nature and
characteristics of the substrate, traffic, loadings
and weather conditions (see technical fact sheets
presenting the various types of Polybitume®).
Polybitume® P is covered by a Technical Opinion.
