This document describes the structure of arteries and veins. Arteries have thick muscular walls composed of three layers - the outer tunica externa, middle tunica media, and inner tunica intima. Veins also have these three layers but their walls are thinner than arteries. Both arteries and veins contain a central open space called the lumen to allow blood to flow through.
