Kainic acid is commonly used to induce seizures in animal models and causes selective damage to limbic system structures like the piriform cortex. The document analyzes the effects of kainic acid injections on the piriform cortex of rats. Microscopic analysis found evidence of neuronal degeneration in the piriform cortex of kainic acid treated rats, including positive fluoro-jade B staining, nuclear pyknosis, and eosinophilic cytoplasm. The control rats showed normal piriform cortex histology without these signs of damage. The study demonstrates neuropathological changes in the limbic system due to kainic acid-induced excitotoxicity.
