2. A verb is a word that expresses an action, occurrence, or state of being. It is
a fundamental part of a sentence, as it conveys what is happening, has
happened, or will happen in relation to the subject of the sentence.Verb,
latin Verbum, most important.
Verbs are divided into two broad categories, and each is further divided into
subcategories.
1. Mian/Ordinary/Common verbs.
o i. Transitive verbs
o ii. Intransitive verbs
o iii. Linking verbs
o Iv. Finite verbs
o v. Non finite verbs
3. 2. Helping or auxiliary verbs
I. Base auxiliary.
i. Be verb(is am are was were)
ii. Do does( did doing done)
iii.Has/Have ( Having/had)
II. Modal auxiliary
Can , could, May- might,
Will –would, shall should
Must, ought to,
Used ( to), need, dare
4. Transitive
A Transitive Verb is a Verb that denotes an action which passes over from
the doer or Subject to an object.
1. I threw the ball. (The verb "threw" takes the object "ball")
2. She wrote the letter. (The verb "wrote" takes the object "letter")
3. He painted the picture. (The verb "painted" takes the object "picture")
4. They bought the house. (The verb "bought" takes the object "house")
5. We ate the pizza. (The verb "ate" takes the object "pizza")
6. The teacher taught the lesson. (The verb "taught" takes the object
"lesson")
7. The company produced the movie. (The verb "produced" takes the
object "movie")
8. The chef cooked the meal. (The verb "cooked" takes the object "meal")
5. Intransitive:
An Intransitive Verb is a Verb that denotes an action which does
not pass over to an object, or which expresses a state or being ; as,.
The flowers bloomed
The storm thundered.
The baby cried.
The music sounds beautiful
The situation feels urgent
The room feels cold
She is happy.
Thers is a flaw in this diamond.
6. Note. Most verbs can be used both as Transitive and as Intransitive
verbs. It is, therefore, better to say that a verb is used Transitively or
Intransitively rather than that it is Transitive or Intransitive.
Eg
Run.
1. She runs the company.
2. She runs every morning.
Write.
She writes articles.
She writes well.
Sings
She sings a song.
She sings beautifully.
7. Note.-Some Verbs, e.g., come, go, fall, die, sleep, lie, denote actions which
cannot be done to anything ; they can, therefore,never be used Transitively.
such a sentence as The man killed himself ' where the Subject and the Object
both refer to the same person, the verb is said to be used reflexively.
Sometimes, though the verb is used reflexively. the Object is not expressed. In
the
following examples the reflexive pronoun understood is put in brackets:-
• The bubble burst [itself].
• The guests made [themselves] merry,
• Please keep [yourselves] quiet.
• With these words he turned [himself] to the door.
8. Linking verb:
Linking verb is a verb, which does not give a complete meaning itself. It
needs object for completion of meaning.
Eg
Ahmed looks..........? (Happy).
The cake smells.......?(awful)
Aslam is..........? T(tired).
Finite Verb and Non finite verb.
Finite verb is that verb which agrees with its subject in person and number.
They are going to the city.(Are not is).
Being students, being student. You all be punctual. Ali be punctual. (Be, being,
been)
