MT09 Using Dell’s HPC Cloud Solutions to maximize HPC utilization while reduc...Dell EMC World
Separate the hype from the reality of Cloud in HPC.
Building upon our Dell EMC HPC Portfolio, come deep dive into Dell’s hybrid cloud model for HPC. Built on private and public cloud models, Dell EMC's Hybrid HPC Cloud Solutions can help you optimize your CapEx and OpEx costs, while creating a flexible computing environment that adapts to dynamic HPC workloads, while ensuring resource availability. Maximize your RoI through a Hybrid HPC Cloud that enables your innovation and competitiveness.
Software is the basis for flexibility and smart storage virtualization and management software can improve the utilization of storage resources so that you optimize
and right-size to meet your needs. Hardware-defined by definition is rigid and inflexible therefore it leads to purchasing more than you want since you don’t want to underestimate your needs. Software can also allow the latest innovations like Flash-memory SSDs to be easily incorporated into your infrastructure without having to “rip and replace” your existing storage investments.
The document compares the total cost of ownership of physical, virtual, and cloud-hosted desktops. It finds that virtual desktops can reduce costs by up to 36% over physical desktops, while cloud desktops deliver further savings of over 20% compared to on-premises virtual desktop infrastructure. On-premises VDI has high upfront infrastructure costs that offset labor savings, while cloud desktops have no infrastructure investment and provide the lowest total cost of ownership through a pay-as-you-go model.
Hypervisor-based VDI utilizes virtual machines running on hypervisors to provide desktop environments to users, while blade PCs allocate physical servers with each user having their own dedicated resources. The main differences are in performance, scalability, and cost - VDI has lower performance but higher density and flexibility, while blade PCs provide better performance through dedicated resources but have lower density and scalability. Administrative overhead and overall costs vary depending on the environment and needs of the organization.

Hyperscale Nightmare-Potential Consequences of using Consumer SSDs in DatacenterStorage Switzerland
Hyper-scale data centers (and many enterprises as well) face relentless pressure to contain costs. One way to lower those costs is to use consumer-grade solid-state drives in their scale-out server architectures, instead of the enterprise-class SSDs that are routinely used in these environments. This strategy can lower the initial cost for flash drives, but can have other undesirable consequences that cause real, long-term problems. In these high drive-count infrastructures, deploying the wrong flash can cause a nightmare scenario of:
• Inconsistent Performance of non-enterprise drives
• Poor Reliability of non-enterprise drives
• Replacement of failed drives - adds cost, disruption
• Management of mixed drive environment - can be complex
• High Cost - of abandoning alternative SSDs altogether

Virtual SAN vs Good Old SANs: Can't they just get along?DataCore Software
Dark forces in the IT industry like to polarize popular opinion; most recently they argue for keeping all the storage in the servers using Virtual SANs, leaving nothing external. These sudden mood swings, while attracting a young cult following, lose sight of lessons learned over the past 20 years.
Truth is, a blend of internal storage close to the apps with good old fashioned external secondary storage out on the network makes a heck of a lot of sense.
In this presentation, Senior Analyst Jim Bagley from SSG-NOW, shows the not so black-and-white considerations driving customers to tap into the internal storage resources of clustered servers. Also, it provides some practical guidance on how to incorporate existing storage arrays and even public cloud capacity into your Virtual SAN rollout

Task Incident Readiness with Veris, Judy Nowak at TASK Toronto, April 27, 2...patmisasi
The document discusses the need for organizations to have an incident response (IR) framework to adequately prepare for security incidents. It introduces the VERIS framework, which can help lay the foundation for an IR program by describing attacks. VERIS provides a common vocabulary for recording and sharing information about security incidents and helps organizations understand the variety of actions, actors, assets, and attributes involved in incidents to improve detection and response capabilities. The document advocates that understanding details about incidents through frameworks like VERIS is important because organizations cannot detect or respond to what they do not understand or know about attacks and attackers.
The document discusses cloud computing and security considerations for moving to the cloud. Some key points:
1) It defines cloud computing based on NIST definitions and emphasizes automation, elasticity, and flexible costing as core benefits of the cloud.
2) It notes that while cost savings are often cited, security and privacy are often overlooked but critical considerations for moving to the cloud.
3) It provides an overview of cloud security elements including identity and access management, data security, encryption, network security, and ensuring secure cloud architecture and design.
This document describes Scalar's managed security services. It notes that cyber attacks are increasing in frequency and severity, posing a major challenge for organizations. While security has become a top priority, many companies lack the in-house expertise to effectively manage their security. Scalar's managed security services allow companies to leverage their specialized skills and expertise through three tiers - Insight, Monitoring, and Management - to address security issues for a predictable monthly cost. This reduces the need for companies to invest in recruiting and training their own security staff.

2015 Scalar Security Study Executive Summarypatmisasi
The document summarizes a study on the cyber security readiness of Canadian organizations. It finds that only 41% of respondents believe they are winning the cyber war due to challenges like lack of in-house expertise. Organizations experience an average of 34 cyber attacks per year, with almost half involving sensitive information loss. High-performing organizations that invest more in cyber security (12% of IT budget vs 8% for low performers) are better prepared to mitigate risks and experienced fewer attacks involving information loss (38% vs 53%). The practices of high performers can help organizations improve cyber security effectiveness.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
