SETTING THE SCENE
The International Fantasy Football League successfully conducted its 9th Annual Draft this past Saturday, and with that, all 12 teams
representing 7 nations and 4 continents have filled out their 16-man rosters in preparation the upcoming 2023 season. As with every
draft there were plenty of surprises. Here is a quick glimpse…
With this year’s 1st overall pick the USA’s CORY PROCTER and the PROCTERS wisely chose last year’s leading fantasy back, Austin
Ekeler. They did quite well with their earlier selections, picking up Burrow (2nd rd.), Stevenson (3rd rd.), and Hockenson (5th rd.).
However, after that, there just ain’t much there. The Procters find themselves dangerously low at wide receiver, where they have Moore
and Dotson, neither of which reached the 1,000 yard plateau. Obviously, the Procters will have to do a lot of wheeling and dealing
between now and the start of the season.
With the 2nd overall draft selection, the USA’s GRIDIRON GOOSE and the MIGHTY CYCLONES chose Bengals wideout Ja’Marr
Chase, and for the 2nd straight year. Altogether, the Mighty Cyclones, who finished with a league-best 13-1 record in 2022, managed to
bring back 4 key players, including Chase, AJ Brown, Devonta Smith, all of which racked up in excess of 1,000 receiving yards, along
with last year’s #1 kicker Justin Tucker. In addition, all 4 of their running backs are currently penciled in as starters, namely Kamara
(NO), Williams (DEN), and 1,000-yard rushers Walker (SEA) and Allgeier (ATL).
Australia’s JOSHUA MANN and STORMYOZ shocked the fantasy football world by passing up the opportunity to pick up Christian
McCaffrey and Justin Jefferson and, instead, used their 3rd overall pick and 2nd round pick on David Montgomery and D’Andre Swift,
who rank 22nd and 27th among running backs, respectively. They managed to get big playmaker St. Brown, who ranks 9th among
wideouts, but their next highest ranked receiver, George Pickens, ranks 26th with the rest of the litter dropping as low as 57th.
For the second year in-a-row, YANRAN WANG and SHANGHAI WANG not only drafted 4th but, like last season, used it to land
Christian McCaffrey. In their first 3 selections, they picked up the #2 back (McCaffrey), #5 wide receiver (Tyreek Hill) and #3 tight end
(Mark Anderson). In later rounds they snatched up 1,000-yard receivers Cooper, Metcalf and McLaurin, as well as 1,000-yard rusher
Dalvin Cook. Clearly, Shanghai Wang is in position to rise from the bottom of the heap into a legitimate World Bowl contender.
What might prove to be the steal of the draft is Mexico’s RENE CHAVEZ and the DRAGONES who selected Justin Jefferson with the
5th overall pick. In rounds 2 and 3, they landed Henry and Herbert, both who rank 6th at their respective positions. Yet, in the rounds
following, their remaining players consist mostly of good, but not great players, including Sanders, Aiyuk and Waller. Perhaps, the
Dragones see something that most fantasy team owners don’t. One thing is for sure, they’ve been to 3-straight World Bowls, so before
anyone criticizes their choice of players might want to keep that in mind.
Choosing 6th were the UK’s JASON RUTH and the BOWL BOUND MAVERICKS. For the first time in 9 drafts the Bowl Bound Mavs
used their 1st pick on a quarterback, specifically Patrick Mahomes. Perhaps Mahomes’ appeal was just too tempting to turn down. In
rounds 2, 3 and 7, the BB Mavericks chose Jets teammates Hall, Wilson and Rodgers. It could be quite interesting seeing what kind
results throwing these three players into the starting lineup can produce, especially if Mahomes goes down with a legitimate injury.
Their remaining draft choices are either inconsistent, unproven, or underachieving players.
Drafting 7th were Mexico’s JORGE BOADA and BLEEDING BLUE. For the 6th time in 9 drafts, they went hot ‘n heavy after a top
quarterback with their 1st round pick. Enter Jalen Hurts stage-right. Next, they used their 2nd and 3rd round choices on reliable backs
Pollard and Chubb, followed by WR Keenan Allen and the Eagles #1 defense in rounds 4 and 5. Other than wideouts Watson and
Brown, and Russell Wilson, there’s not much to write mama about in the later rounds. Bleeding Blue has a decent corps of starters, but
little in depth, thus making staying healthy paramount if they want to return to the post-season.
Few teams did as well in the first 8 rounds as the UK’s GORDON DEDMAN and the MEN OF STEEL. Barkley, Davante Adams, Najee
Harris, Ridley, Lamar Jackson, Jeudy, Freiermuth, and Deshaun Watson. Together, this collection of proven, quality players can go
nose-to-nose with the stiffest of competition. Moreover, their later picks are decent fill-ins during the bye weeks, each having shown the
potential of putting up strong numbers.
For the 9 time in 9 drafts, the USA’s BERKELEY WILEY and the BIG DAWGS , who selected 9th overall, chose a running back,
namely 1,000 yard running back Josh Jacobs. They then followed up by picking up wideouts Lamb (2nd rd.), Godwin (6th rd.) and Kirk
(7th rd.). Toss in Prescott, Pierce, and Goedert, clearly the Big Dawgs have enough talent and should easily be able to improve on last
year’s 7-7 record; especially if the Prescott-Lamb combo starts clicking.
With the 10th draft pick, Russia’s MIKHAIL REZAKOV and the RUSSIAN HACKERS took a safe risk by selection rookie Bijan
Robinson. With their first 5 rounds, they reeled in two projected top-ten running backs (Robinson, Taylor), two top-15 wide receivers
(Olave, Higgins) and a top-ten QB (Justin Fields). Like most teams, their latter picks consist of 2nd, 3rd and 4th tier players, half of
which are equally capable of putting up insane numbers as they are of falling flat on their faces.
At #11, Canada’s MICHAEL REMIS and REMIS ISLAND seized the top-rated tight end, Travis Kelce. With their 2nd round selection,
they took Josh Allen. In rounds 3, 4 and 5, they snagged three starting running backs in Jones, Mixon and Conner. Remis Island
continued to make solid picks with the Saints defense, Mike Evans and Tyler Lockett coming in rounds 6, 7 and 8. From that point on,
3. their choices were chancy, bringing in 6 running backs with their last 8 selections. From what they have as they’re starting base Remis
Island should put up a good fight against the tougher teams and sweep games against the runts of the litter.
With the 12th overall pick, China’s defending World Champions HUI GUO and the JAYMIN broke ranks of selecting running backs in
the 1st round by using their first 3 draft picks on wide receivers. Kupp went first, Diggs in the 2nd round, and Waddle in the 3rd. All
three are considered top-11 among wideouts. Backs Etienne and Dobbins, tight end George Kittle, Akers and Mike Williams were
scooped up in the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th rounds. Some may scoff at some of the players, implying they can’t stay healthy and so
forth. But if half of them live up to their full potential, the Jaymin could be well on their way to successfully defending their world title.

Throughout the IFFL’s past 8 drafts, 4 of those teams picking 1st overall failed to reach the playoffs. To date, none of those 8 teams
picking #1 have ever won a World Bowl and have combined for a less than stellar 50-55-1 record. In the last 6 drafts, each1st overall
pick was spent on RBs. Collectively, those 5 teams amassed a 28-39-0 record.
