Corrosion & Mechanism of Dry corrosion
1. Dry or chemical corrosion occurs via direct chemical reaction between a metal surface and gases in the atmosphere like oxygen, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and sulfur dioxide. It involves adsorption of gas molecules on the metal surface.
2. The mechanism of dry corrosion involves oxidation of the metal surface and reduction of gas molecules, forming a metal oxide layer. The nature and properties of this oxide layer determines whether it is protective or porous.
3. According to the Pilling-Bedworth rule, a protective oxide layer has a volume equal to or greater than the original metal, while a porous layer has a smaller volume, allowing further corrosion. Metals like chromium and aluminum form protective passive layers contributing to corrosion resistance.

'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in
these patterns indicate shifts in economic and social conditions. Monitoring such changes with the

- 5. Nature of Metal The tendency of a metal to undergo corrosion is dependent on the nature of the metal. Metals with lower reduction potential undergo corrosion easily where as metals with higher reduction potential do not undergo corrosion easily .
- 6. Surface state of the metal Corrosion is a surface phenomenon ,larger the surface area or finer the grain size of the metal,more will be the corrosion. smooth surface resist corrosion than the rough surface.
- 7. Nature of corrosion products If the corrosion product is insoluble, stable, uniform, and nonporous, it acts as a protective film preventing the further corrosion. If the corrosion product formed is soluble, unstable porous and non-uniform the corrosion continues.

- 9. pH of the medium In general, lower the pH higher is the rate of corrosion. If the pH is greater than 10, corrosion of iron is very less due to the formation of protective coating of hydrous oxide of iron. If the pH is between 10 and 3, then presence of oxygen is essential for corrosion of iron.
- 10. Temperature As temperature increases, rate of corrosion also increases. This is because increase in temperature increases the conductance of the aqueous medium. As a result rate of diffusion also increases.
- 11. Presence of oxidizing agents The presence of oxidizing agents increases the corrosion rate of the metal.
