2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

chosen based on religion are given below-
Muslim
Hindu
Buddhist
Christian etc.
Muslim’s cloth: Muslims have different dress codes for different contexts. Conservative ideas of
hijab require people to dress modestly both for outside and religious contexts. Clothing for
everyday wear, inside and outside the house is different, and very much depends on the family.
11. Fig: Muslim cloth
Muslim Man’s cloth: Muslim men wear thobes as well as Kufi Hat's. Muslim men also have many
rules about clothing, some of the strictest ones involve gold, there are over 160 rules. A man’s
clothing is modest and loose so as not to emphasize the shape of the body. It should cover at
least the area from navel to knees. They should wear knee covering religious clothing to prayer
and many more.

Muslim Woman’s cloth: Islam says that women should dress in a very special way. This dress
code applies to women and adolescent girls, but not to children. Usually, women who travel to
Islamic countries should also wear such dress. In the very least, the garment should cover the
shoulders. Long-sleeved garments (and trousers) are preferred. Use a headscarf to cover the hair
(especially when you enter a mosque or other place of worship).
12. Fig: Muslim women clothes
Abaya long flowing outer garment worn over all other clothing.
Jilbab garment that may be worn like a dress, usually with trousers underneath.
Dupatta a long rectangular scarf usually worn over the shoulders in front of the neck, or
however you prefer. Women will sometimes use a dupatta over their head for a hijab.
Scarf or veil - the head covering worn by many Muslim women. Traditionally, it is a square
folded into a triangle or simply a triangle, but also can be a rectangular shape. To wear-
bring the two corners together and pin/knot/wrap at the neck.
Niqab a veil worn to cover the face. A niqab can be made to leave only the eyes
uncovered, only the eyes and forehead uncovered, or to leave the forehead, eyes, and
nose uncovered, covering only the mouth.
Burka a long, loose piece of clothing covering the whole body from head to feet, worn in
public by women in many Muslim countries.
Hindu people’s clothes: Men and women in India are draped and wrapped according to tradition,
history and location. A dhoti or lungi, which is a loose skirt- or shorts-type wrap for men, is
common in rural areas and in high heat, and most often it is worn alone, without a shirt. Women
also wore these garments and went topless until Muslim conquerors overtook large parts of India
in the 12th century and ordered women to cover their bodies and heads. In urban areas men
13. often wear long, buttoned shirts and loose pants called Sherwanis or kurta pajamas. Women
throughout India wear traditional saris made of cotton, silk or factory blends and the 5 to 7 yards
(4.57 to 6.4 meters) of fabric that make up a sari are wrapped on the body in countless ways
depending on where the wearer lives. Hindu women wear short tops and slips or petticoat-type
garments underneath and tuck the ends of fabric into waistbands. Other forms of wrapping leave
cloth falling loosely over shoulders or covering the head. Salwar kameez, a pant and long-tailed
or to thickness shirt outfit made of lightweight fabrics is most common for women in more urban
areas.
Fig: Hindu clothes
Christian people’s Clothes: Vestments are liturgical garments and articles associated primarily
with the Christian religions, especially Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Anglicans, Methodists, and
Lutheran Churches. Other groups also make use of vestments, but this was a point of controversy
in the Protestant Reformation and sometimes since - notably during the Ritualist controversies
in England in the 19th century. Clerical clothing is non-liturgical clothing worn exclusively by
clergy. It is distinct from vestments in that it is not reserved specifically for services. Some women
belonging to various Christian denominations also practice Christian head covering, a traditional
practice since the days of the early Church. Additionally, some Christians practice the wearing of
plain dress, notably traditional Anabaptists (such as Old Order Mennonites), Conservative
Friends, and Methodists of the conservative holiness movement; for example, in its 2015 Book
of Discipline, the Evangelical Wesleyan Church teaches that.
14. Fig: Christian clothes
Buddhist Clothes: Buddhist kāṣāya are said to have originated in ancient India as a set of robes
for the devotees of Gautama Buddha. A notable variant has a pattern reminiscent of an Asian
rice field. Original kāṣāya were constructed of discarded fabric. These were stitched together to
form three rectangular pieces of cloth, which were then fitted over the body in a specific manner.
The three main pieces of cloth are the antarvāsa, the uttarāsaṅga, and the saṃghāti. Together
they form the "triple robe," or ticīvara. The ticīvara is described more fully in the Theravāda
Vinaya (Vin 1:94 289).
