This lesson plan teaches 2nd grade students about different fruits and vegetables through reading a book and playing an online game. Students create an alphabetical list of fruits and vegetables and learn where in the world they are grown. The plan aligns with language arts and geography standards and assessments student understanding of the alphabet and global fruit/vegetable distribution.

The different kind of fruits and vegetables
Grade Level: 2nd Grade
Duration: 45 minutes
Subject Area: Language Arts and Geography
Standards:
1.1 Recognize and use knowledge of spelling patterns.
1.2 Create readable documents with legible handwriting.
1.2 students compare and contrast the absolute and relative location of places and people
and describe the physical and/or human characteristics of places.
Objective: Students will learn to recall the names of fruits and vegetables they will also try
to make educated guesses on which letter of the alphabet has the greatest amount of fruits
or vegetables. They will also have a better understanding of where and in what conditions
some fruits and vegetables grow.
Materials:
The book “Eating the Alphabet: Fruits and Vegetables from A to Z”
Pencils
Computer
Map label with all the countries.

2. Worksheet with each letter of the alphabet followed by space to write down the
names of fruits and vegetables.
Teaching Procedure:
As a class we will read the book “Eating the Alphabet: Fruit and Vegetables.
Each student will get an alphabet worksheet and will be ask to make a list of all of
the fruits and vegetables they know for each letter.
Then go over the alphabet worksheet with the entire class. Ask the students some
questions like which letter has the most fruits or vegetables that begin with it? Can
some one tell me which one is their favorite fruit or vegetable? If you have children
from other countries that know of a unique fruit that other children have never seen
or heard before encourage greater exploration of the fruit like what country does it
come from?
Then, tell the children that they are going to play a game on the computer about
fruits and vegetables.
But before starting the game provide each child with a map that is label with all the
countries and go over it with them.
Give each child the opportunity to play the game, read the clues and facts the game
provides about the fruits and vegetables.
At the end ask each child what they learn with this game and if they remember
where some fruits or vegetables grew at?
Assessment: Each student will have a good understanding of their alphabet and the
different kind of fruits and vegetables that exist around the world.
Extension Activity:
For art children can create their favorite fruit or vegetable. Just provide the children
with different kind of construction paper and colors.
Teacher can also provide the names of the fruits and vegetables for spelling words.
3. Description of the lesson plan:
In this lesson plan children would read the book “Eating the Alphabet: fruits and vegetables
from A to Z” with the entire class. Then children will spend a couple of minutes thinking
about the different kind of fruits and vegetables they know and they will try to put them in
alphabetical order. Then the entire class will play a game in the computer called “Where do
these fruits and vegetables grow around the world.” With this game children will learn in
what countries and climate conditions each fruit and vegetable we eat grows.
Description of how geography is used in the lesson plan:
Geography is included in this lesson plan because with this computer game children have
the opportunity to learn the map and the different continents. Also learn where each fruit
and vegetable grows at. They will also learn other interested facts about the fruits and
vegetables they eat.
4. How many do you know?
Instructions: Write down as many fruits and vegetables that you can for each letter of the alphabet!
