Vincent Van Gogh was a post-impressionist Dutch painter born in 1853 who produced over 900 paintings and 1,600 drawings in only 10 years before developing a mental illness. He was influenced by Dutch Baroque and Rembrandt early on and painted bleak Dutch landscapes. In Paris, he was exposed to Impressionism and developed a simplified use of intense color. Later in Arles, he began using loose brushstrokes and vibrant yellow, green, and blue tones in landscapes, though he struggled with mental health issues and ultimately died by suicide in 1890.
