Dutch grandmaster Anish Giri’s playstyle has been often described as
“conservative” and “particularly difficult to beat”. This careful nature
means he also often loses opportunities to convert an advantage into a
win – the sole reason behind his nickname X. One example of his
conservative nature would be his streak of 14 draws at the 2016
Candidates Tournament held in Moscow, Russia. This streak also was
the inspiration behind Chess24.com’s April Fool’s piece on Giri writing
a book titled “My 60 Memorable Draws” (a play on Bobby Fischer’s My
60 Memorable Games).
Give me X.

and said that he had to give him a nickname. Since ‘Dr J’ and ‘Big E’
were already taken, he said he was gonna call him X and the rest is
history, despite the fact that his devout mother found the nickname
X to be blasphemous.

I’d say it’s a X thing; the car’s good on the brakes so we can use that to
our advantage pretty well. I mean, the tracks we’ve been going to have
also been pretty nice for those kind of moves too.”

got an idea. You make the iced tea and make a big pitcher, and we’ll
just put a little lemonade in it and see how that works.’ We mixed it
up, and I got the solution about where I wanted it and I put the
lemonade in it,” he recalled in an interview. “I had it for lunch after
working on the golf course. I thought, ‘Boy, this is great, babe. I’m

This is one of the most famous rules in all of sports, so strict that the referee can
force players to change under threat of disqualification from the tournament. In the
past, many of the sport's top players have found themselves on the wrong end of
this rule.
It's believed that the rule stems from the 1800s, when this sport was played
primarily at social gatherings, particularly by women. The sight of sweaty patches
was considered to be inappropriate, hence a particular practice was adopted to

turn into relative wind. The women’s equipment followed suit with
the redesign in 1999.
