Direct Practice with Children
& Families
It’s in our DNA…
• Just so you know: Working with children and families is
in our DNA:
• For example, be it inner city families & children in the
settlement house movement such as the Hull House in
Chicago, or,
• The "friendly visitors" of the Charity Organization
Societies, a forerunner to today's family service
agencies, and,
• Finally, the child welfare movement, New York Children's
Aid society in mid 1800s that was influential in the birth
of social work
In child welfare settings we
are to be found in…
• Child protective services, family preservation (Catholic
Charities), residential facilities, adoptions, group Homes,
foster care
• Also, schools, family based services, faith-based services
• Other facts:
• F & C is 2nd largest practice area for SW
• Nearly 50% of F & C will work private, nonprofit; other
41% in public sector: according to Introduction to Social
Work text, 2016
Locally they will be…
• Child Protective Services
• Parenting Centers
• Public Schools
• Family Outreach Services, such as Catholic Charities &
Lena Pope
• Residential services, such as ACH All Church Home
• Family crisis centers, such as Alliance for Children
• Military and Veteran Services
• Refugee & Immigration Support Services
Some of the coursework for
this specialization, to name
just a few:
• Direct practice with children and families
• Treatment of Children & Adolescents
• Seminar in Gender issues
• Social policy and child welfare
