THESES PROPOSAL:
Employment of social workers is expected to grow 25 percent from 2010 to 2020,
faster than the average for all occupations (Occupational outlook handbook 2012). Social
work students need to prepare for the uphill battle that they must face in choosing a
difficult career, with low pay and often little respect. After reviewing literature, it was
found that the Introduction to Social Work classes is relatively unimportant to the college
and/or social work departments or even national social work publications. This fact is
evident by the small amount of literature on the subject that was not found. Further
investigation needs to occur to determine if increased critical thinking skills are used in
the Introduction to Social Work classroom then students will better be able to
comprehend the overall concept of social work when they complete the class and prepare
for future social work classes and the overall profession.
