The Components Of Social Work
The main element that drew me to the profession of social work was the diverse opportunities
available. Social work is a very flexible field that consists of many different components such as
family and child welfare, poverty and inequality, and substance abuse/ addiction. The main
component of social work that interests me is working with people who have disabilities, mental
and/or physical. According to our textbook about 11.3% of social workers with bachelor's work in
this field (Cox, Tice, & Long, 2016, pg. 17). I discovered that I was interested in this component of
social work after a traumatic experience that left me with a disability.
Component of Social Work A disability is usually defined as a decline in function that can either be
temporary or permanent. There are two main groupings of disabilities; categorial and functional.
Categorial disabilities include mental illnesses and sensory damage which often leads to
developmental delays. In comparison, functional disabilities cause limitations during physical
activity. Individuals can also suffer from more than one disability which is known as a co–occurring
disability (Cox et al., 2016, pg. 159). Social workers often view disabilities in three types;
developmental disabilities, physical disabilities, and mental disabilities. A developmental disability
is a long–term disability that is typically diagnosed before age 22. These disabilities include Autism,
Cerebral Palsy, and Down Syndrome (Cox et al., 2016, pg.

WHAT IS SOCIAL WORK?
As a little kid when people would ask me what I wanted to be when I grow up, I honestly didn't
know but somehow the words "doctor" or "lawyer" would come out of my mouth. I knew early on
that I wanted to help people and when we would have the career fair at school, the doctors or the
lawyers were the ones who said they helped other individuals. In those early years of life I wasn't
exposed to many things but I was always eager to learn. As time passed and people asked me what I
wanted to be when I got older, I simply said that I wanted to help people.
The term "social work" was nothing more to me than the lady who came to the house to investigate
when the child had a bruise on their body. I knew that I really like to connect people with resources
that will help them grow in life. I explained to an upperclassmen at the University of Illinois a few
days before classes started that I would love to have a business where people can come to me for
anything, rather it's help with planning a wedding or just someone to talk to because they had a
stressful day. She stopped, thought about what I said for a quick second, and then replied, "It sounds
like what you want to do is in the field of social work". After our conversation I added Social Work

few instances when I may pick and choose the specific client population I work with. Since my

I've now been at my placement for over a month and have experienced many different opportunities.
Over the last few weeks I learned about the process of facilitating a care conference with family
members and the resident. I learned how to write up notes about the care conference to chart.
Another learning experience I discovered was the process of guardians for residents who cannot
make their own decisions. My supervisor and I sat down to discuss the process and went through
paperwork on how to become a guardian. I learned a lot about Power of Attorney's during this time
and the legal work behind guardianship. Later, my supervisor said I'd be able to go to a guardianship
court hearing to watch the process unfold. I'm looking forward to that so I can see the whole picture

My current employment at the ARC has allowed me to work with individuals with developmental

Class. At first glance, it is a simple action movie about mutants with inhuman powers, but upon
further inspection, social work concepts are bound to shine through. One concept in particular that

movie and the ethical principles in social work that can be seen in the characters' interactions with

Individuals would gain a significant benefit from the group such as the development of several skills
and knowledge in team working and communication. Some people with similar experiences might
join self–help and mutual aid group because group offers individuals a helping system/relationship

Thus, many of child predators are never brought to justice. The wounds of trauma are deep, and
leave a lasting impression on the child. As a social worker, I believe that I could provide comfort to
victims of childhood sexual assault. Stress and trauma continue long into adulthood, the traumatic

In the beginning of the semester we were given the task to complete 25 or more hours of community
service. This task was given to be completed for my Social Work Ethics class. We were to volunteer
at an organization that was associated with social work and would give us an experience. I was
given the opportunity to work/volunteer along with Trio, a student support service at Fort Valley
State University.
In Trio I helped with multiple workshops/ served as an office assistant. My responsibilities were to
provide customer service via telephone, email and greeting visitors and responding to inquiries.
These workshops were hosted by the center for retention services for students. In the workshops, I
helped by assisting with the set–up of equipment for the presenters. I made sign–in sheets and
monitors the table to make sure all students did in fact sign in. I also help by disputing out brochures
and make sure that their questions were well answered. I also performed general office duties suck
as taking accurate messages, sort and filing documents and assistance students with application
process for Trio admission. Being an assistant enhance my ability to communicate effectively,
verbally and in writing, and to relate to others in a professional, helpful manner.
Volunteering with Trio helped me see things from the workers point of view. I gained some

first day of classes, I was up early and full of energy, I walked into my biology classes excited to do

I learned from my mistake, and now know how I will act differently in the future. Instead of waiting
for the conversation to die down enough for me to summarize and bring us back on topic, in the
future I will cut off the side conversations and ask that we give our respect to the person who was
speaking previously and was interrupted. Additionally, it was recommended to me by a fellow
classmate that facilitating the group so that speakers take turns sharing by going around the circle
might help to prevent this situation from happening again. As previously discussed, this method has
both benefits and drawbacks, however I witnessed how well the 'going around the circle' method
worked for eliminating interruptions and side conversations. I was hesitant about using this style of
group due to my own anxieties regarding knowing when my turn to speak was coming up, and so I

Micro–level social work involves working with individuals, whereas, macro–level social work
involves improving conditions on a larger scale, for groups of people such as a community. The
levels of social work practice are not only related, but they influence each other and often display

So how could a social worker that is an Anglo–Saxon is able to understand someone who learned
English but is Hispanic not born in the US. Not to mention that all Hispanics are not the same since

I met with the two participants individually for face–to–face interviews that lasted approximately 60
minutes each. Through a series of both open–ended and Likert scale questions, the semi–structured
interviews focused on the participants' chosen intentional learning activity. The interview included
19 statements that asked the participants to respond with a number valued 0 to 10; 0 meaning total
disagreement and 10 was total agreement. The interviews were audio recorded on my laptop
computer and I obtained consent from the participants.

Among adult learners engaged in purposeful learning activities, prior successful experiences led to a
strong sense of self–efficacy in their learning that enabled them to overcome situational barriers to
learning that arose.

Alyse shared what prompted her to become involved in the MSW program: "I really wanted to do
something with kids, so probably in a school. I didn't necessarily know I wanted to be a school
social worker until I was in the program, but pretty much any job like that you need to get a
master's." Alyse previously worked with children in a school setting as an ABA Therapist. When
asked to rate her previous experience related to the learning, Alyse gave herself a 3 on the scale.
Alyse commented, "I wouldn't say I had a lot of experience in social work specifically, but I did
work in a school for a long time where I worked with kids...I feel like I had more experience than
other people."

Social Work Values
Social work is a vast field with complex and numerous factors that can create confusion on what
exactly the social work profession is. Many theories and values have been assigned to social work
based scientific development and studies, assumptions and inherent beliefs, which can only add to
the chaotic understanding of the profession. Although the National Association of Social Workers
(NASW) was only founded in 1955, (Platt and Cooreman 2001, pg. 113) social work has been
utilized for centuries, including Henry VIII of England who passed an act mandating, "local parishes
to take care of their destitute and create a procedure for the collection and administration of
donations to the poor." (Platt and Cooreman 2001, pg. 92). Discussed in the following is a more
concrete definition of social work along with core values needed to be acquired to support the
practice of social work effectively. Social work can be defined as, "promoting social justice and
social change with and on behalf of clients." (NASW, 2008, Preamble) Simply put, social workers
are there to advocate and promote a more tolerable world in which everyone in society is treated
equally, with fairness and are provided the same opportunities. In addition to this definition, some
value assumptions have to be clearly made in order to support the profession of social work. The
values that best compliment the above definition are most suitably described in the National
Association of Social Workers (NASW) code of

The Social Work Profession
In the social work profession, the primary goal is to aid and empower individuals or families who
are faced with oppression, vulnerable in society, and living in poverty (Code of Ethics, 2008). Social
workers strive to improve the welfare of those who need assistance meeting their daily basic
essentials for survival. According to Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Basic needs, a person requires
five clusters to make them an integrated and self–motivated whole in society. The five clusters
include: physiological needs; security needs; social needs; self–esteem needs; and self–actualizing
needs (Aanstoos, 2014). The Code of Ethics is an important component that ensures that the
profession is held to its highest standard and to protect the community. In this paper, the intern was
placed at the Mobile County Department of Human Resources in the Adult Protective Services
department and will be disclosing information about a particular case during their internship. To
protect the clients and all parties associated confidentially within this case, material that could reveal
their identity will not be discussed and only relevant information about the case will be addressed.
The clients in this case have been both diagnosed with agoraphobia with panic disorder. According
to the Social Work Dictionary (2014) agoraphobia is described as "an irrational and persistent fear of

Post–Reflection on Social Justice and Transformation
Introduction
Before beginning the Master of Social Work program at Laurier I figured I had a strong
understanding of what social work was. However, I quickly learned that I had only scratched the
surface. I knew oppression existed, but I never understood the depth of it. I now know that I was
afraid of it. It was easy for me to stay silent, because it was such a comfortable position to be in.
Doing nothing meant I had nothing to lose and everything to gain. This was influenced by the
privilege I had. We talk a lot about our social location, or identifying who we are. Before I get
further into this paper I wish to identify myself. I am a white male born to two white, heterosexual
Anglican parents. I grew up having mostly white friends, until graduating high school. I also have
been diagnosed with clinical depression, which is a significant attribute of my identity. As a result of
these intersectional attributes they create an identity that is both privileged and oppressed and these
elements change depending on the situation (Curry–Steven, 2007, p.37). It is important to
understand who you are, as it will shape who I am in the work I do as a social worker.
As the term comes to an end I realize that my understand of social work has changed and that I have

I met Christine over a year ago in dingy old Olive Garden where we both worked at the time.
Christine was among the many servers at Olive Garden that were working their way through school,
but that wasn't all she was doing, she was also raising 4 children on her own. Due to our vastly
different ages and places in life, Christine and I's relationship never surpassed work place
acquaintances, but I always had a lot of respect for what she was doing. This last spring Christine
finally graduated with her BSW and left Olive Garden for social work and hasn't looked back. To
start off Christine answered some questions about her education and experience. Christine is fairly
new to the field of social work, considering she graduated less than a year ago. She graduated last
spring with her Bachelor's of Social Work from our own Utah Valley University social work

Over the past 15 years I have worked within homecare and residential settings supporting elderly
people with disability, Parkinson disease, and dementia, assisting with personal care, medication,
house duties and helping them with their welfare. Since 2013, I have worked children and adults
