This document presents a study on the patterns of mass media use and its impact in Rangpur District, Bangladesh. The study aims to explore mass media use patterns in rural and urban areas, categorize users, and investigate the impact of mass media on users. A descriptive research design is used with a sample of 100 media users selected purposively. Data will be collected from both primary and secondary sources and analyzed using MS Word, Excel, and SPSS. The expected outcomes are identifying mass media use patterns, classifying media and users in the study area, and examining the impact of media on users.

In today’s technological world social media is the new reality of human life. The easy access of Internet around the world has made it one of the most popular medium of information and communication. It has the ability to completely eliminate geographical distance for communication that exists between people. the influence of social media have changed all areas of peoples live. The strong and most visible changed were observed in the young generation especially tertiary level students. Many parents and guardians are worried that students are spending too much time on Facebook and other social media sites and have not enough time to study.

Reflections On Social Media Use Along The Academic Research Life Cycle

This short paper presentation at 12th IADIS International Conference on Information Systems (IS 2019) argues for the need for discussion on the role social media could have in the research life cycle, particularly for Information Systems (IS) scholars. ICTs are pervasive, and their societal impact is profound. Various disciplines including those of social sciences are present in the online discourse and join the public debate on societal implications of ICTs and scholar are familiar with web tools for publishing. Information Systems scholars could not only further explore the possibilities for joining that online discourse, but also could explore the potential social media may have for activities related to the research life cycle. In this paper we do not focus solely on social media as a data collection source but regard their merits as a channel for scholarly communication throughout the whole research life cycle, from the start of getting inspired to conduct a research, finding collaboration partners or funding, through suggestions for literature, to the stage of research dissemination and creating impact beyond the own scientific community. This paper contributes an original approach to research communication by combining the research life cycle with practical insights of how social media can be applied throughout each phase of that lifecycle. We conclude with some questions debating the stance that (future) IS scholars are prepared to become the digital scholar that can manoeuvre well on social media for scholarly communication.

Social Media: In the Work Place and Patterns of Usage Trevor Nesbit, University of Canterbury, Canterbury, New Zealand Abstract: As the adoption of social media increases, a number of important themes have emerged. The two main themes that are investigated in this study are the perceived benefits and risks of using social media in theworkplace;and thepatternsofusageof socialmedia.The themeof theperceivedbenefits and risks of using social media in the workplace is investigated through a literature review and a survey of third year commerce students about their perceptions. The pattern of usage theme is also explored through the same survey of a group of third year commerce students. The analysis and discussion of the results from the survey highlighted a number of interesting issues connected to the two themes. The two main issues relating to the perceived benefits and risks of using social media in the work placeare firstly, that use of socialmedia tools to enhanceemployeeretention is not seen as being important by the group of respondents in this study in comparison with other benefits identified in the literature; and secondly, that the reduction of trust in an organisation and incompatibility with organ- isational culture are not seen as being amongst the significant risks and challenges when using social media in the work place by the group of respondents in the study. The three main issues relating to the patterns of usage theme include that Facebook is the most frequently used social media tool by the students surveyed who were under the age of 30; that there is potentially a difference between the genders in the frequency with which Wikis are used; and that defining what constitutes frequent use of one social media tool may be different to what constitutes frequent use of another social media tool. Other issuesraised in this study includesocialmediaasanappropriatemarketing tool toreachpeople under the age of 30 (and potentially other age groups), and has potential to be used as part of educational programmes, however some care would need to be taken over the choice of social media tool. Intercultural research in the area of communication was initiated in the early 20th century. Over the last few decades, researchers have built a solid theoretical basis in this field. Nowadays, intercultural analyses include a rich collection of texts on cross-cultural differences, the specificity of the phenomenon in the area of verbal and non-verbal communication and also the role of the media. There is no doubt that in an era of dynamic transformations of media use by people all over the world, the sub-discipline of intercultural communication is facing another challenge – that of including social media and network communication processes into new empirical theories and research.
