“It doesn’t get done in a day. Enabling Project Based Learning with the iPad”
Project Based Learning is not a new concept to teachers and learners. Project Based Learning allows a student to work over an extended period of time answering a driving
question. The question can be so deep that it requires students to create a project to share their findings with others.
In a traditional classroom, a Project Based Activity can take days or even weeks to complete. The iPad has not only transformed the way that we teach and learn but
has enabled teachers to deliver and manage Project
Based Lessons in a creative, time efficient and effective
way that allows students to critically think, analyse and
present their findings.
Participants of this workshop will leave with a toolkit of
iPad apps such as Tools4Students, Explain Everything,
Creative Book Builder, and resources to assist in the
development of Project Based Lessons in the classroom.

Libraries have started moving away from being places of consumption and are becoming places of production. Libraries are about discovery; giving people a safe and comfortable place to dream, think, and create is very important because it gives people a chance to explore various technologies and educational opportunities that they can use to enrich their lives. STEAM education refers to teaching and learning, mostly hands-on, in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. There are several ways to incorporate the STEAM educational framework into your libraries and this webinar will touch on the following and more:
* Learn what STEAM is
* Creating and managing a collaborative learning space, oftentimes referred to as a makerspace
* Administering a robotics league
* Organizing learning events
* Partnering with businesses and other organizations
* Assessing the success of your programs

Here are a few options to consider:
1. Discuss your concerns with your co-presenter or AC. Get feedback on potential changes before making them. Consistency in our workshops is important.
2. Try presenting the section as is during your practice run. You may find it works better than expected.
3. If the section truly doesn't work, propose an alternative activity or approach to your AC for approval before the workshop. Make any approved changes consistently for that workshop.
Consistency is key both within individual workshops and across presentations of the same workshop. Taking initiative to improve is great, but be sure to maintain consistency approved approaches. Discussing changes with supervisors first allows us to present workshops uniformly.

The document lists various materials and technology to bring for a professional development session on using technology in the classroom. It includes laptops, iPads, projectors, speakers, and information about the host school. Attendees will see demonstrations of using Web 2.0 tools, iPad apps, and create their own content using iMovie and Book Creator apps. USB drives can be used to obtain copies of files and presentations.

In fact, there are hundreds of thousands of apps on the market designed for teaching and learning. In this workshop we will explore apps available for instruction and for all curriculum areas. You will see examples of how they can be used successfullly in a collaborative, academic setting.

IntroductionsHi everyone,We’re here to facilitate a workshop today on the use of iPads in ESL Education. We’re going to touch on how they can be used in the classroom, how they can serve as useful resources for language teachers and how they can be a repository with a wealth of resources for our learners.
Where to start? Perhaps for some, it can be overwhelming when contemplating the use of an iPad or tablet. Although they are generally very intuitive devices,there is a lot to learn, and it takes some time to determine just what to do with them and how to make the best use of them, for personal and professional reasons.Before we start talking about some of its uses and ways in which we can optimize its use, there is one thing we should clarify.We chose the iPad as the topic of this presentation because it’s the device we are using and have done some research on for this presentation.
We are not endorsing Apple products, nor are we prepared for an Apple vs. Android debate.
On the contrary, although the number of applications, or apps, as we’ve all lovingly come to know them, is greater for the iPad, (October’s stats stated 550,000 apps were available for Android users, and 700,000 were available at the App store for ipads, iphones etc…, Apple products), this could change in the not so distant future with the rapid growth in the tablet market and in the Adroid app development market. The purpose of this presentation is to explore the possibilities of the tools and resources that are out there, and many of the tools we discuss today will be available not only for the iPad, but for other tablets as well. At the end of the presentation, we’ll give everyone a handy cheat sheet with all the details.
Now, let’s get back to where we were, shall we? (Silly, but just thinking out loud! Lol)So, why would our learners want or need to use an iPad or tablet? Let’s look at some of the stats.
We can pick out the ones we would like to highlight on this infographic.
Link to Interview: http://youtu.be/nTo8hi9kXjMSo, most importantly, what’s in it for ESL Learners? (We can put this question out to the audience, and they may get more than our list!)ConvenienceSize- no need to carry heavy books aroundMultiple usesDynamic in natureInteractiveAllows for collaborationInternet connection- connection to social media…Great! The list goes on, and it certainly will continue to go on as more apps are created on a daily basis.Now, let’s look at an example of a learner, a student from Niagara College, who uses his iPad daily in his EAP and OSLT classes, to hear his thoughts on this question. He kindly agreed to do an interview for us to discuss both how he uses his iPad, and how he feels it can be useful for other learners. (Play interview clip here.)
Ok, we know that iPads (tablets) are useful, and we’ll see more examples of how they can be put to use shortly, but it’s also important to look at the resources we have, literally at our fingertips, and be critical of them, so that we can make the best choices and select the most helpful resources for ourselves and our learners.
This being said, let’s jump into looking at how exactly the iPad can be useful for language learning. First we’re going to have a look at some of the basic applications and functions of the device that can be used “out-of-the-box”, and following this, we’ll look at more apps for use with the different language skills.
If you’ve just purchased the iPad, without buying or downloading any free applications, there are a number of useful tools at your fingertips that can serve both teachers and learners in many ways. Let’s have a look at a few of these. (Make handout, and look at these together with the group. Those with iPads may be encouraged to open some of the applications we discuss.)CameraNotes Copy and Paste Screen capture Facetime (newer versions of iPad) Email InternetMapsiTunesiBooks Youtube App (no longer out-of-the-box- now it’s an app)
What makes the features of the out-of-the box functions of the iPad unique is that they are not only tools for individuals, but they allow for both collaborative and experiential learning in the classroom.
Now that we’ve looked at some of the basic functionalities, let’s get into the fun part. We’re going to take a look at some apps and work together to try them out, while at the same time keeping in mind the pedagogical applications and challenges of using these apps in the classroom. If you feel the app you are looking at may have other uses, you may also wish to consider how it may be useful as a resource for teachers and learners.Form groups and complete the following, based on the apps suggested by skill. (We’ll choose apps that can be used on phones as well, in case a large number of the people in the audience don’t have iPads.)Choose an app.Look at its features and download it, if you wish.Discuss some of the possibilities and challenges of using this app in a classroom with ESL learners.
