Using evidence based cognitive behavioural coaching to facilitate gender transition: Goal setting and pre and post intervention measures of mental wellbeing
Oral presentation at the 1st International Congress of Coaching Psychology Conference UK. British Psychological Society, Special Group in Coaching Psychology, 14th & 15th December 2010, City University, London, UK.
The document discusses the concept of nishkama karma or action without attachment to results from the Bhagavad Gita. It explains that while every action is associated with an expected result, becoming obsessed with a particular outcome can distract from the task. However, it is difficult to completely dissociate an action from thoughts about its result. True nishkama karma involves performing selfless actions where the procedure becomes the result, without claiming credit or feeling disturbed by failures. The highest form of such action is described as namasmaran, or remembering one's true self, which involves blossoming of wisdom through holistic perspectives and programs.

This study used the Repertory Grid Technique to assess the personalities and performance levels of 38 horses across 3 stables. Observers generated constructs to describe each horse's personality and rated their performance on a scale. Horses rated as high performers tended to be described as nice, gentle, easy to handle and patient. Low performers were often rated as difficult, inexperienced, tense, nervous and hesitant. The study found relationships between horses' agreeableness traits and their rated performance levels.

Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) involves restructuring negative thought processes and increasing performance enhancing thoughts and behaviors. Key CBT methods for athletes include goal setting, self-talk, imagery, and decreasing performance interfering thoughts. Research has shown CBT can reduce perfectionism and anxiety, increase hope and performance, and positively impact the coach-athlete relationship. Coaches can utilize CBT by encouraging goal setting, imagery, positive self-talk, and helping athletes challenge negative cognitions.

Paper presented at the 29th World Summit on Positive Psychology, Mindfulness & Psychotherapy May 21-22, 2018 New York City, New York, USA
The emergence of Coaching Psychology and Positive Psychology as ways to improve wellbeing and reduce distress have proliferated over the last few years. However, this has traditionally been the domain of Counseling or Clinical Psychology. This research aimed to explore these different helping approaches sit alongside each other and under what circumstances one approach should be used over another to ensure maximum efficacy and client safety.
Abstract
Over recent years, the emergence of Coaching Psychology (CP) and Positive Psychology (PP) as methods to improve wellbeing and happiness have grown rapidly. From their initial starting point, the two disciplines have matured and are now developing a growing evidence base as effective interventions for the improvement of ill-health, an area that has traditionally been the domain of Counseling or Clinical Psychology (C/CP).
However, this growth has not occurred without debate, tension and misunderstanding. One area yet to be fully explored is how do CP and PP sit along side their therapeutically orientated sister disciplines of C/CP and under what circumstances should one approach be used over another so as to ensure maximum efficacy and client safety. Through the analysis of over 100 hours of clinical and coaching session notes, this paper explores the possible link and divide between the different approaches.
The use of thematic analysis led to the identification of a number of common and different themes between the approaches. By adopting the notion that these different approaches were “conceptual maps” of phenomena, with different “Ranges” and “Focuses” of convenience, allowed possible overlap and difference to be coherently explored and integrated.
This culminated in the creation of a Wellness Staging Framework (WSF) based upon a dual continuum model of “wellbeing” and “complexity & severity of presentation”. This staging framework was then retrospectively applied to the data set.
Results indicated that the WSF could provide a way in which allocation to C/CP or CP/PP could be decided. Exploration of the data also revealed that mindfulness (used implicitly or explicitly) was common in all approaches and was often central to a hermeneutic growth cycle that underpinned changes in wellbeing, happiness and goal attainment. Several methodological issues and avenues for future research were identified and are discussed.
Long term effects of cognitive behavioural coaching on gender transitionDr. Daša Dasha Grajfoner

Two years after completing the course, participants reported increased confidence presenting as their identified gender, greater engagement in social interactions, and improved quality of life and well-being. The coaching provided transferable tools, sustainable confidence levels, and increased social integration and adaptation in their new gender role.
Running Head: CBT VS REBT 1
Cognitive Behavioral Theory Versus Rational Emotive Behavioral Theory
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive behavioral Therapy (CBT) was developed by Aaron T. Beck during the 1960s
(McLeod, 2015). CBT refer to a system of psychotherapeutic intervention that take into account
the impact of people's experience structures on their feelings and behaviors (Wheeler, 2014).
Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), was created by Albert Ellis during the 1950s which
centers on resolving emotional and behavioral issues (McLeod, 2015). REBT is a type of CBT
which stresses the role of irrational beliefs in provoking dysfunctional emotions and maladaptive
practices (Păsărelu & Dobrean, 2018).
Similarities between Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Rational Emotive Behavioral
Therapy
CBT is grounded on the idea that how we think- cognition, how we feel- emotion and how we
act- behavior, all relate together, in particular, our thoughts decide our feelings and behavior
(McLeod, 2015). Hence, negative and impractical thoughts can give us distress and result in
issues. CBT can be utilized to treat individuals with an extensive variety of mental health
problems. REBT urges an individual to recognize their general and irrational beliefs, for
example, “I must be perfect" and subsequently persuades the individual challenge these false
beliefs through reality testing (McLeod, 2015). Converting irrational beliefs to more rational
ones is the aim of the therapy. The two therapeutic theories include human emotions and
behavior which is linked to thinking, beliefs, attitudes and ideas, and are considered to have a
strong impact on attitude change. Nevertheless, despite the fact that these two treatment
strategies are from two different entities and course of events, they correspond or are related in

different ways. The two therapies are entangled on the idea that individual habits and emotions
are brought forth from thoughts, stances, inspirations and credence, not from situations.
Additionally, both CBT and REBT are identical with their perceptions that if it’s someone’s
thinking that rousing dysfunctional beliefs, then they should change their beliefs as reiterated by
American Psychiatric Association (2013).

There are many kinds of therapeutic approaches to treat mental disorders, but research has shown that results demonstrated by Cognitive behavioral therapy is more effective and moreover permanent. Even the most mild cases of depression can be treated holistically with cognitive behavioral therapy centers.
Presentation describing cognitive behavioural approach to coaching. The talk at the Clinical Meetings in Human Sexuality, April 15, 2010, The Porterbrook Clinic, NHS Sheffield Health and Social Care, UK.
This document summarizes research on depression in early stage dementia and the development of an intervention called IDEA (Intervention to prevent Depressive symptoms and promote well-being in EArly stage dementia). It finds depression is common in dementia, with risks including age, agitation, and sleep disturbances. Existing treatments show little evidence but behavioral activation shows promise. IDEA aims to develop and test in an RCT a behavioral activation intervention for early stage dementia to prevent depression. It involves consulting people with dementia and carers to develop a treatment manual and will examine feasibility and acceptability.
Anxiety Disorders in Kids...An Overview for Parents and TeachersStephen Grcevich, MD
Anxiety disorders are common in children and teens, affecting around 8% of adolescents. Left untreated, anxiety can interfere with daily functioning and academic or social performance. Cognitive behavioral therapy and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are both effective treatments, with the best results seen from a combination of the two. Common anxiety disorders in youth include separation anxiety disorder, specific phobias, generalized anxiety disorder, and social anxiety disorder.
Bridgeway Rehabilitation Services provides psychiatric rehabilitation services to help adults with serious mental illnesses live independently. They began implementing motivational interviewing (MI) agency-wide to help staff engage clients and address ambivalence about change. Senior management supported extensive MI training for all staff to learn principles, skills, and use a common language. Regular supervision and practice helped staff integrate MI into services like housing, outreach, and career support. Initial outcomes showed more clients progressing to action stages in recovery planning and completing treatment programs.
Cognitive Screening and Clinical Decision Support at a DistanceSamantha Haas
This document discusses new technologies for cognitive assessment and clinical decision support at a distance. It describes how rapid neuropsychological screening can be done in under 10 minutes remotely with over 80% accuracy for identifying risks. Neuropsychological screening can also be done remotely in about 35 minutes. These technologies allow providers to more efficiently diagnose and monitor patients. The document then discusses an integrated neuroscience assessment that combines questionnaires and objective cognitive tasks that can be deployed online. Finally, it discusses how cognitive markers and clinical algorithms can provide powerful tools for diagnosis and treatment when combined with telehealth.
The Mindfulness Based Program for Infertility (MBPI) aims to reduce depression in infertile women. The study found that after completing the 10-week MBPI, which included mindfulness training, women reported significant increases in self-efficacy in dealing with infertility and significant decreases in depressive symptoms. A mediation analysis showed that increased self-efficacy mediated the effect of the MBPI in reducing depressive symptoms. The MBPI helps reduce depression by improving women's confidence in their cognitive, emotional, and behavioral skills for managing infertility.
Internship Progress in Clinical Mental Health CounselingJacob Stotler
An internship in neurofeedback treatment of trauma involved several components over 100 hours. The intern established a brain training pamphlet and parent support group. Reviews and internship goals were completed. Research on brain training treatments was compiled. Training in a brainwave software program was undertaken. Records and other documentation like a procedures and intake manual were established. The lab space was also organized. The internship utilized an integrative approach including neurofeedback, counseling, psychoeducation and skills training to address trauma's effects on cognition, behavior and physiology from a multimodal perspective.
Assistive Cognitive Technology for EldersVivek Misra
Assistive technology aims to improve the functional capabilities of people with disabilities or cognitive impairments. As the population ages, cognitive assistive technologies and cognitive rehabilitation interventions become increasingly important. Cognitive enhancement therapy combines computer-based cognitive training with group therapy to improve functions like attention, memory, and problem solving. Neuromodulation techniques combined with cognitive enhancement therapy may prolong the effects. Neuroplasticity enables the brain to compensate for injury and disease through new connections formed via experience-dependent rehabilitation programs. Both low-tech and high-tech memory aids can be used.

This document summarizes a behavior transformation program called "Going Against the Grain" that aims to enhance integrity, decision-making, and student retention. The program teaches critical thinking, rational reasoning, and objective understanding. It takes participants on a personal discovery journey through lessons, exercises, and self-assessment. A study found the program improved students' GPAs and behavior ratings, with greater improvements seen in female students. The program focuses on social, developmental, intellectual, cultural, relational, financial, and economic areas through 26 weekly lessons. It aims to help individuals reconnect with their identity and efficacy.
Amy Bucher, Ph.D., works in Behavior Change Design at Mad*Pow, a purpose-driven strategic design agency in Boston. Before joining Mad*Pow in 2016, Amy worked on behavior change products in-house at CVS Health and Johnson & Johnson.
Amy received her A.B.from Harvard University, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in organizational psychology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She’s a frequent speaker at behavior change and UX conferences where she talks about motivation, engagement, and product design.
The document discusses the development of an empowerment training concept called EHLE for elderly people to make informed choices about healthy lifestyles. The training concept is based on three theories: the theory of planned behavior, self-regulation theory, and social network theory. The training aims to empower elderly individuals by communicating health risks, motivating lifestyle changes, and setting achievable goals. Risk communication, motivational interviewing, and goal setting techniques are used to develop tools and materials for the EHLE training modules.
The document discusses the importance of employee mental health, noting that over half of employees feel overworked while leadership says they are thriving. It proposes that organizations implement self-care programs, culture change programs, and high stress resilience programs to energize employees and create a culture of mental wellbeing. The BecauseYOU company offers various online workshops and customized programs to support employee mental health and build resilience.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy is defined as psychotherapeutic treatment that helps people in learning how to manage and identify worrying or negative thought patterns that cause an undesirable influence on one's emotions and behaviors. It focuses on changing the negative thoughts automatically, which often contributes to and worsens o emotional difficulties, anxiety, and depression. These spontaneous thoughts harm an individual mood (Luo & McAloon, 2021). Cognitive-behavioral therapy is a well-established treatment for anxiety disorder in adolescents and children. Research has shown that about 60% of youths recuperate from anxiety disorder and experience a significant reduction in the disease’s symptoms after treatment (Stjerneklar et al., 2019). According to various studies, cognitive behavior therapy has proven effective in treating anxiety disorders in children and adolescents. This form of therapy helps promote improved self-control, elude activates, and develop coping skills for day-to-day stressors.
On the other hand, anxiety disorder is a form of mental health illness that makes one respond differently to certain conditions and situations with fear and dread. An individual with an anxiety disorder typically feels anxious and nervous. Anxiety interferes with one's ability to function normally, and a person overreacts when something triggers their emotions; hence one cannot control their response to situations. According to a national institute of health report, almost one in every three elementary students experiences an anxiety disorder. These have increased steadily by 20% between 2007 and 2012; the high incidence of anxiety disorder among youths usually arises due to pressure and high expectation to succeed (Krister et al.,2017). In the contemporary world, youths feel more pressured to succeed academically, and these thoughts often overwhelm them. Cognitive-behavioral therapy of generalized anxiety disorder treatment helps address the anxiety and mental prejudices, equipping one with a relaxation mechanism suitable for managing tension and marginal exposure to disastrous exposure and imageries to traumatic situations and prevent over stressful behaviors.

This document summarizes a presentation on Illness Management and Recovery (IMR), an evidence-based practice used in mental health rehabilitation. It discusses how IMR can help with the psychosocial aspects of brain injury recovery by addressing issues like anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and ongoing mental health symptoms. The presentation reviews the traditional goals of brain injury rehabilitation like independence, interdependence, integration, inclusion, self-determination, and productivity. It provides an overview of how IMR programs work through educational modules focusing on topics such as psychoeducation, coping skills, social skills, relapse prevention, medication management, stress management, and building social support. The presentation emphasizes that recovery involves more than just physical or cognitive gains, but also social, emotional

5-hydroxytryptamine or 5-HT or Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that serves a range of roles in the human body. It is sometimes referred to as the happy chemical since it promotes overall well-being and happiness.
It is mostly found in the brain, intestines, and blood platelets.
5-HT is utilised to transport messages between nerve cells, is known to be involved in smooth muscle contraction, and adds to overall well-being and pleasure, among other benefits. 5-HT regulates the body's sleep-wake cycles and internal clock by acting as a precursor to melatonin.
It is hypothesised to regulate hunger, emotions, motor, cognitive, and autonomic processes.

The biomechanics of running involves the study of the mechanical principles underlying running movements. It includes the analysis of the running gait cycle, which consists of the stance phase (foot contact to push-off) and the swing phase (foot lift-off to next contact). Key aspects include kinematics (joint angles and movements, stride length and frequency) and kinetics (forces involved in running, including ground reaction and muscle forces). Understanding these factors helps in improving running performance, optimizing technique, and preventing injuries.

Congestive Heart failure is caused by low cardiac output and high sympathetic discharge. Diuretics reduce preload, ACE inhibitors lower afterload, beta blockers reduce sympathetic activity, and digitalis has inotropic effects. Newer medications target vasodilation and myosin activation to improve heart efficiency while lowering energy requirements. Combination therapy, following an assessment of cardiac function and volume status, is the most effective strategy to heart failure care.
Gene therapy can be broadly defined as the transfer of genetic material to cure a disease or at least to improve the clinical status of a patient.
One of the basic concepts of gene therapy is to transform viruses into genetic shuttles, which will deliver the gene of interest into the target cells.
Safe methods have been devised to do this, using several viral and non-viral vectors.
In the future, this technique may allow doctors to treat a disorder by inserting a gene into a patient's cells instead of using drugs or surgery.
The biggest hurdle faced by medical research in gene therapy is the availability of effective gene-carrying vectors that meet all of the following criteria:
Protection of transgene or genetic cargo from degradative action of systemic and endonucleases,
Delivery of genetic material to the target site, i.e., either cell cytoplasm or nucleus,
Low potential of triggering unwanted immune responses or genotoxicity,
Economical and feasible availability for patients .
Viruses are naturally evolved vehicles that efficiently transfer their genes into host cells.
Choice of viral vector is dependent on gene transfer efficiency, capacity to carry foreign genes, toxicity, stability, immune responses towards viral antigens and potential viral recombination.
There are a wide variety of vectors used to deliver DNA or oligo nucleotides into mammalian cells, either in vitro or in vivo.
The most common vector system based on retroviruses, adenoviruses, herpes simplex viruses, adeno associated viruses.
