The document discusses the legacy and lessons learned from the Vietnam War. It outlines the human and financial costs of the war to both the US and Vietnam. Key lessons identified include that the US public will not tolerate long wars with increasing casualties; clear entry and exit strategies are needed; military power alone cannot overcome an enemy's will to fight; the importance of understanding a region's culture and history; and the need for effective communication and accurate portrayals of war. The document questions why the US lost in Vietnam, why communism was chosen, and broader impacts on trust in government and foreign policy.
Bootiful Microservices in a Legacy Environment: Lessons LearnedVMware Tanzu
SpringOne Platform 2016
Speaker: David Julia; Associate Director, Pivotal
Building Microservices in a green field environment is amazing! But the realities of some of our largest and oldest institutions is that there is a lot of value in existing legacy systems. When you're building on top of legacy systems, there are many challenges that green field development does not even have to consider. Join me for a 30 minute session in which we look at some patterns that we have employed over the last 2 years of building Spring Boot based microservices in the context of legacy systems. I'll speak to tried and true strategies for creating "strangler applications", strategies for moving away from the database as an integration point, and how to start carving off bounded contexts for your new microservices. I'll also speak to a handful of pit-falls to be avoided as you make the journey to a bootiful microservice landscape.
Use of SOA and Web Services Technologies for EA Migration - Lessons Learned o...Nathaniel Palmer
SOA and Web Services technologies can provide powerful tools and capabilities to effect migration towards an Enterprise Architecture (EA), but what are the challenges to such an exercise, and how can they be overcome? Based on a case study at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the first effort in HUD to analyze and design the replacement of several legacy systems with an integrated and services-based
system, this presentation will provide a technical overview of SOA and Web Services, and lessons learned from the project. These lessons will cover methodologies and modeling artifacts that were developed for the effort, the use of BPM based on the Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) and system adapters to provide an abstraction layer for system integration, an example of how Web Services can directly support EA migration, and final considerations to pass onto similar projects.

Identity Summit UK: KEEP TALKING: LESSONS LEARNED DURING OUR MIGRATION FROM L...ForgeRock
IGOR RAMADAS, SENIOR SOFTWARE DEVELOPER, ZALANDO
RODRIGO REIS, SENIOR SOFTWARE DEVELOPER, ZALANDO
In this talk, Zalando software engineers Rodrigo Reis and Igor Ramadas will describe our transition to a cloud-based infrastructure that still supports communication with legacy systems. They will show how to enable secure communications to services that weren’t originally designed with security in mind. Finally, they will discuss how they’re using automation to seamlessly deploy Zalando’s new infrastructure, talk about the challenges they’ve faced along the way, and describe their solutions.
Cloud in a public sector environment is an interesting proposition. In business today there is an over riding pressure to reduce IT costs and in many countries in Europe there is a central “cloud first” policy intended to encourage the adoption of cloud within the Public Sector.
Yet there are concerns about security, privacy and availability of government and citizen data stored off premise in a public cloud entity.
However the technical and commercial flexibility of cloud can offer significant business advantages.
SpingOne Platform 2016
Speaker: Philip Glebow; Director IT, Gap
The Gap is rapidly adopting Cloud Foundry. As part of that adoption, our developers are adapting to a new set of patterns, tools and processes. This talk focuses on what patterns worked for us in considering integration, messaging, data, scaling, and other concerns. We’ll share what we've learned, how we’re rapidly delivering new capabilities with Cloud Foundry and where we’re headed next.
The road to continuous deployment: a case study (DPC16)Michiel Rook
Dutch PHP Conference 2016
It's a situation many of us are familiar with: a large legacy application, limited or no tests, slow & manual release process, low velocity, no confidence.... Oh, and management wants new features, fast.
But how to proceed? Using examples and lessons learned from a real-world case, I'll show you how to strangle the legacy application with a modern service architecture and build a continuous deployment pipeline to deliver value from the first sprint. On the way, we take a look at testing strategies and various (possibly controversial!) tips and best practices.

As in many mid-to-large size organizations, you may have traditional Java enterprise applications, which are considered heavy and cumbersome, in terms of development, deployment and operations. You are thinking about migrating legacy applications for a long time but migration is a complex puzzle and there are many missing pieces. At Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, one of the world’s largest institutional investors, we have successfully solved many puzzle pieces with migrating traditional Java enterprise applications using Spring Boot, Spring Cloud and Cloud Foundry. This presentation will benefit many of you who may be in the same shoes as we were. Learn how we:
-solved dependency management issues
-accelerated application development and deployment
-monitored and checked application status
-migrated monolithic apps to microservices using Spring Cloud
-leveraged Platform as a Service.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

“It's silly talking about how many years we will have to spend in
the jungles of Vietnam when we could pave the whole country
and put parking stripes on it and still be home for Christmas.”--
Ronald Reagan (1965)
14. Long-term Questions
• Why did the U.S. lose the Vietnam conflict?
• Why would the Vietnamese choose communism?
• Will we ever be able to trust our leaders?
• How does the U.S. view the world?
• What is the purpose of U.S. foreign policy?
