This letter summarizes the upcoming term for the Upper Primary pupils at Stronsay Junior High School. Pupils will review their year and complete profiles, with a focus on preparing P7 students for secondary school. They will continue developing language skills through reading, spelling, handwriting, and comprehension activities. In math, pupils will review concepts and learn new topics like angles, data handling, and decimals. This term's topics are the Vikings and Olympics, incorporating various subjects. Pupils will study world religions, with Hinduism chosen this term. French, art, PE, music, and crafts will also continue with specialist teachers.

Dear Parent/Guardian
Welcome to another new term! This summarises what will be happening in Upper Primary:
Pupils will be reviewing their year and looking to the future too, in order to complete their
profiles for the session, especially P7s moving into secondary soon. Pupils are encouraged to
discuss their personal achievements and goals in and out of school and continue to make a
record with evidence in their achievement books.
In Language, we will be reading some further fiction, followed by non-fiction in small and
larger class groups, with a focus on famous people. Weekly spellings will be given along with
related homework and assessment, with additional work in class as appropriate. There will
again be up to two handwriting sessions per week with additional practice at home where
required. Most of this term’s writing will be again be topic based (see below). Pupils will
continue to develop their comprehension skills through our resource boxes and other media.
There will be a focus on listening and talking, through a variety of activities that develop
specific skills such as following instructions and sharing opinions as well as ‘Olympics’
related tasks like interviewing.
In Maths we have begun by revision of written methods for solving number problems. Much
of this term’s work will be assessing and consolidating what has been covered already via
‘Round Ups’. Pupils are yet to study some position, movement and angle, data handling and
progress further in decimals (e.g. using thousandths) and percentage where appropriate.
They will look at the budgeting side of money and will also consolidate measuring skills
through practical activities.
This term the class will carry out Young Sports Leader sessions in class with Mrs Dennison
and Catherine Johnson from Active Schools during her planned visits. Following extended
Scottish Dancing last term we hope to start badminton straight away this term. We are
hoping for decent weather to keep active outdoors too.
We are rounding off the Viking topic by looking at the relevance to Orkney and the impact
made on our culture.
Our final topic this year is Olympics and Countries which covers many aspects of Health
and Wellbeing (including an Olympic themed sporting event), as well as RME (beliefs, values
and actions), Social Studies (the history of the games, geography, environmental impact
and cultural diversity). Pupils will study continents and their various countries around the

2. world, and their flags, culture and geography. Our subscription to the Oddizzi site will
allow us to carry out research, find out and work with information in different ways and
even connect us to other schools near and far.
Related language tasks will include written/verbal commentary, letters, instructions (rules
of a game or sport), reading the news, interviewing, reporting and autobiography. There are
plenty of drama and art opportunities such as role play, figure drawing and designing
medals as well as links to Numeracy through looking at data such as match statistics and
medal tables, and measurement in athletics. Pupils will use technology in a variety of ways –
to research, learn, record and present.
Pupils are keen to continue studying Other World Religions and have chosen Hinduism for
this term.
French, Art, PE and Music continue with visiting specialist teachers and pupils are reminded
to bring kit, instruments etc. when required, as well as handing in homework on time. In
addition Miss Knox will teach craft weekly later in the term.
Pupils will continue using their diaries daily to record and check homework and other useful
