QUESTION 3
TARGET AUDIENCE
MY TARGET
AUDIENCE
For my media production my demographic is young people aged 15-21, including male and female.
However could appeal to an older audience as it has folk themes and an older mind setter story behind it.
Geographically my production appeals to everywhere, Europe because the musician is European and it got
released in Europe. Not only Europe but middle east countries due to the themes which occur throughout
the production which is very relevant for themselves.
‘A niche market is the subset of the market on which a specific product is focused. The market niche
defines as the product features aimed at satisfying specific market needs, as well as the price range,
production quality and the demographics that is intended to impact. It is also a small market segment.’
(source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niche_market)
The target audience for my production is most certainly going to be interested in niche medias. Ranging
from films, music/videos, newspapers etc. The audience are also going to be clued up about current world
happenings so they understand the references that occur in my media production.
QUESTIONNAIRES
We as a class got told to get some feedback from people about our media productions and that’s exactly
what we did. We collected this information from questionnaires. Myself and my partner gave our
questionnaires to people in our school who are people of the age etc. of our target audience where they
watched and rated to what they think is a true judgement. One problem I faced straight away was whether
people were being genuine and answering honestly or if they were just trying to be nice. Unfortunately I
cannot know what they did but I believe from the feedback we got back, people were being genuine. I don’t
want to class this a true test of my target audience because firstly, I am unsure on the legitimacy of
people’s answers and secondly, the people who were asked were 17-18 years old and British so it is not a
true representation of my target audience but they are part of my target audience.
Overall the feedback I received was positive and it helped us understand
what could be changed or kept the same if we were to
do create our production again. The majority of the people we asked enjoyed
the production other than one anomaly.
Our audience questions for our questionnaires we conducted gave us information and opinions of each individual
we asked to take our questionnaire. The first question was asking what their gender and age was so we could
ensure that they are within our target audience. The outcome was that they were indeed our target audience,
both male and female 17-18 year olds found an interest in our music video and either related or understood the
concept. After looking through all the questionnaires, there was 9 overall, I looked at the ratings people gave as we
asked for an overall rating and something interesting spoke out to me. The highest ratings came from 2 males and
2 females of similar ages which means that both males and females have an equal understanding and liking for my
production which is something I set out to do from the start. Both myself and my partner have had a lot of
experience with cameras in the past so we were confident when it came to camera skills and composition and the
feedback from our target audience also agreed. In the questionnaire, we asked what the audiences favourite part
of the whole production was and the audience frequently throughout the 9 questionnaires stated that the
composition and camera shots were the strongest part. This is something that I am proud of as we did think hard
before shooting about composition and camera angles etc. and it seems like it paid off.
One aspect of our questionnaire feedback about
our music video which I didn’t like or wish I could
change but didn’t have to time or sources to do so
was that all the people we asked were British. Not
that that is a problem but our production was
aimed at all nationalities due to the references of
western countries. I think it is good that we used
the theme of the current happening of Syrian
migrants throughout our production as it is
relevant and people in Europe and beyond can
relate to it as it is currently affecting them in some
way or another. The emotions that we tried to
portray in our production were ones that we
thought linked well to the song and lyrics itself.
The lyrics Caleb J. Rowan had wrote were
powerful and emotional just like the subject of
our production so the link between the two is
strong. The media is portraying these stories in a
light so British people or other european countries
can relate or understand, this is otherwise known
as the Effects Theory (Hypodermic Syringe,
Innoculation) - what the media does to audiences.
Or said to be the Magic Bullet Theory by Katz and
Lazarsfeld (1955).
Katz and Lazarsfeld (1955)
One of the questions was whether the
music video positively promotes the artist
and what conformed to the artists style
and beliefs. The reaction and response I
receive in terms of this question was
positive and the feedback reflects that
they believe I have the artist, Caleb J
Rowan, justice. With the audiences
response being so positive it has made me
believe I chose the track appropriately to
the concept/idea for the music video and
they compliment each other well. The
song style so, the lyrics, tones and
melodies are heavily linkable to the
themes, composition and mise en scene of
the music video. The audience who gave
me feedback also pointed this out which
was very pleasing as it was my aim to from
the beginning.
