Captain Lakshmi Sahgal was an Indian independence activist and leader who served in Subhash Chandra Bose's Indian National Army. She was born in 1914 in Kerala and trained as a medical doctor. After her marriage failed, she moved to Singapore where she established a clinic for poor workers and joined the Indian independence movement. She helped establish the Rani of Jhansi Regiment, the first women's battalion of the Indian National Army. After independence, she continued her medical work and advocacy for social issues. She received the Padma Vibhushan award in 1998 for her contributions and died in 2012 at the age of 98.
