June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

the Emirates or the UAE, is a country located in
the southeast end of the Arabian Peninsula on
the Persian Gulf, bordering Oman to the east
and Saudi Arabia to the south, as well as
sharing sea borders with Qatar and Iran.
WHERE UNITED ARAB EMIRATES IS

4.
5. • It shares a 19-kilometer border
with Qatar on the northwest
(according to the UAE), a 530-
kilometer border with Saudi
Arabia on the west, south, and
southeast, and a 450-kilometer
border with Oman on the
southeast and northeast. The
land border with Qatar in
the Khawr al Udayd area is a
source of ongoing dispute (in
fact, whether it even shares a
land border with Qatar is in
dispute). The total area of the
UAE is approximately 83,600
square kilometers.
• The United Arab Emirates is
situated in Middle
East/southwest Asia, bordering
the Gulf of Oman and
the Persian Gulf,
between Oman and Saudi
Arabia; it is on a strategic
location along northern
approaches to the Strait of
Hormuz, a vital transit point for
world crude oil. The UAE lies
between 22°50′ and 26° north
latitude and between 51° and
56°25′ east longitude.
GEOGRAPHIC FEATURES OF UNITED
ARAB EMIRATES
7. • The average annual rainfall in
the coastal area is fewer than
120 mm (4.7 in), but in some
mountainous areas annual
rainfall often reaches 350 mm
(13.8 in). Rain in the coastal
region falls in short, torrential
bursts during the summer
months, sometimes resulting in
floods in ordinarily
dry wadi beds. The region is
prone to occasional,
violent dust storm, which can
severely reduce visibility. The
Jebel Jais mountain cluster
in Ras al Khaimah has
experienced snow only twice
since records began.
• The climate of the UAE
generally is very hot and dry.
The hottest months are July
and August, when average
maximum temperatures reach
above 40 °C (104.0 °F) on the
coastal plain. In the Al Hajar al
Gharbi Mountains,
temperatures are considerably
cooler, a result of increased
altitude. Average minimum
temperatures in January and
February are between 10 and
14 °C (50.0 and 57.2 °F). During
the late summer months, a
humid southeastern wind
known as the sharqi makes the
coastal region especially
unpleasant.

ENVIRONMENT OF UNITED ARAB
EMIRATES
9. • The UAE consists of seven 'emirates' and was founded on 2 December 1971 as a
federation. Six of the seven sheikhdoms (Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al
Quwain and Fujairah) combined on that date. The seventh, Ras Al Khaimah, joined the
federation on 10 February 1972
• The seven sheikhdoms were formerly known as the Trucial States, in reference to the treaty
relations established with the British in the 19th Century.
• Artifacts uncovered in the UAE show a long history of human habitation and regional trade
including with Mesopotamia. The area was settled by a number of tribes along both the
coast and interior and was Islamised in the seventh century.
• A number of incursions and bloody battles took place along the coast when the
Portuguese, under Albuquerque, invaded the area. Conflicts between the maritime
communities of the Trucial Coast and the British led to the sacking of Ras Al Khaimah by
British forces in 1809 and again in 1819, which resulted in the first of a number of British
treaties with the Trucial Rulers in 1820. These treaties, including the Treaty of Perpetual
Maritime Peace, signed in 1853, led to peace and prosperity along the coast which lasted
until the 1930s, when the pearl trade collapsed, leading to significant hardship among the
coastal communities.

and Persian inspired architecture is part of
the expression of the local Emirati identity.
Persian influence on Emirati culture is
noticeably visible in traditional Emirati
architecture and folk arts. For example, the
"barjeel" has become an identifying mark of
traditional Emirati architecture and is
attributed to Persian influence. Certain folk
dances, such as "al-habban", are originally
Persian. Local Emirati culture has also been
influenced by the cultures of East Africa
and India
• Major holidays in Dubai include Eid ul-Fitr,
which marks the end of Ramadan,
and National Day (2 December), which
marks the formation of the United Arab
Emirates.
• The United Arab Emirates has a diverse
society. The country's historical population as
a small tribal community has been changed
with the arrival of other nationals — first by
the Iranians in 1810, and later
by Indians and Pakistanis in the 1960s.
• Emirati people are ethnically diverse, with
great ancestors from the Arabian
Peninsula, Iran, Baluchistan and East
Africa. Arab descendants of the Bani Yas, Al
Nahyan and Al Maktoum families in Abu
Dhabi and Dubai, respectively, represent the
Emirati leadership. Al Qawasim have also
