Settlement Restrictions
- After the French And Indian War, England passed the Proclamation of 1763.
This said that colonists could not settle past the Appalachian Mountains.
- The MAIN reason for this was that England knew Native Americans lived past
the Appalachian Mountains and they did not want to fight another war with
them,
Patriots and Loyalists
- As the colonies moved towards rebellion against England, two groups emerged
in the colonies: Patriots and Loyalists.
- Patriots - Americans who supported the war and wanted America to be free.
- Loyalists - Americans who were against the war and liked control by England.
- Which side would you have joined and why?
Boston Massacre
- As you learned in this unit, the Boston Massacre was the name given to an
event in Boston when English soldiers fired into a crowd, killing several
colonists.
- England saw this event as necessary because they felt the soldiers fired to
protect themselves against a mob.
- The colonists saw this as murder. That the English soldiers overreacted and
were not in real danger.
- If you were a colonist at that time, how would you feel about this event?
Mayflower Compact
- The Mayflower Compact of 1620 was an agreement between the Puritans
landing in America. It listed rules for how they wanted to live.
- It gave all people a say about decisions made in the colony.
- The Puritans knew they would need rules because they were far from
England.
- England was too far away to help them, so they created rules for everyone to
follow.

Boston Massacre - As you learned in this unit, the Boston Massacre was the name given to an event in Boston when English soldiers fired into a crowd, killing several colonists. - England saw this event as necessary because they felt the soldiers fired to protect themselves against a mob. - The colonists saw this as murder. That the English soldiers overreacted and were not in real danger. - If you were a colonist at that time, how would you feel about this event?
