Chapter 6 and 7 Identifications
1. William Pitt was a member of the Whig party. He rose to fame during the
seven years war (named The French and Indian War in North America). Pitt led Britain
for two years from 1766 to 1768. The city Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is named after Pitt
2. Robert De La Salle was the explorer who founded the Mississippi River. La
Salle tried to sail down the river into the Gulf of Mexico. La Salle claimed the
Mississippi River Basin, which is known as the Louisiana Territory for France. La Salle
was assassinated by three of his own men on a journey to the Gulf of Mexico.
3. Benjamin Franklin was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States of
America. Franklin was an author, printer, postmaster, scientist, inventor and much more.
Franklin formed both the first fire department and they first lending library. Franklin
campaigned for colonial unity.
4. George Washington was the First President of the United States. Washington
was the leader of the Americans over the British during the American Revolution. He
was commander in chief of the Continental Army. He developed ideas for this country
that are still around today.
5. The Pontiacs were an Indian group in northern North America. This group of
Indians seized Detroit from the British in 1763. They killed over two thousand British
troops in the process of taking over British forces in the area.
6. Huguenots were a religious group of people under the Protestant beliefs. They
were in a frightening battle with the Roman Catholics through out the sixteenth century.
The Huguenots were granted religious tolerance. Due to the Huguenots rise, France
became one of the most feared empires in Europe during the time.
7. The Proclamation of 1763 was issued by London. It said that colonists could
not settle west of the Appalachian Mountains. It was issued to work out the problem with
the Indians in the area similar to the uprising of the Pontiacs.
8. The Albany Congress was a group of representatives that assembled in
Albany, New York. The colonists said that the freedoms they were granted were not
enough. On the other hand, British representatives said that the colonists had too much
power and freedoms and that some should be taken away. Benjamin Franklin was the
leader of this Congress.
9. The Sevens Years War (The French and Indian War) was the war between
British colonists and French colonists with the help of Native Americans. This war was
fought over land through out North America.
10. New France was the areas that the French sailors claimed for France. These
areas consisted of present day northern United States and Canada. In these areas, the
French traded fur and other necessities to the near by Indian tribes. The France built
trading posts in their land to have a stable form of trading in their lands.
