Hand Rolled Applicative User ValidationCode KataPhilip Schwarz
Could you use a simple piece of Scala validation code (granted, a very simplistic one too!) that you can rewrite, now and again, to refresh your basic understanding of Applicative operators <*>, <*, *>?
The goal is not to write perfect code showcasing validation, but rather, to provide a small, rough-and ready exercise to reinforce your muscle-memory.
Despite its grandiose-sounding title, this deck consists of just three slides showing the Scala 3 code to be rewritten whenever the details of the operators begin to fade away.
The code is my rough and ready translation of a Haskell user-validation program found in a book called Finding Success (and Failure) in Haskell - Fall in love with applicative functors.

Editor's Notes
The ways we design and build the world are changing rapidly, which is also changing the tools we use and the ways companies and individuals buy and access software.
To provide our customers greater flexibility and more value from their software investments, Autodesk is gradually transitioning new software purchases for our products to subscription options only. This allows Autodesk to deliver both, as well as an improved user experience and access to a broader portfolio of technology.
In the first phase of this transition, new seats of individual desktop software products, excluding Design and Creation Suites, will generally be available only as a Desktop Subscription after Jan 31, 2016.
Desktop Subscription products provide a simplified product management and deployment experience, and make it easier to introduce new tools and technology into the workflow with lower upfront cost and the ability to pay as you go. Desktop Subscription is available as monthly, quarterly, or annual plans. Autodesk will introduce 2-year and 3-year multi-year Desktop Subscription plans in March 2015.
(For more details: please refer to the press release (Wednesday, February 4, 2015 8:00 am EST) http://news.autodesk.com/press-release/archived/autodesk-details-subscription-transition-new-software-licenses or http://www.autodesk.com/products/perpetuallicenses)
But why are we making such a big shift?
This is just an exciting time in our industry as we see the Future of Making Things changing.
The world around us is changing at a really rapid pace:
Infinite computing
Mobile devices
Pervasive connectivity
Also our means & methods of manufacturing things are changing:
3D Printing
Carbon fiber
These things are really shaping the future of how things are made.
You’re seeing this show up everywhere with smart roads and smart cars.
And we’re seeing a whole new generation of people who are driving these ideas. There are more architectural and manufacturing companies today than there were just 5 years ago.
Every single one of our customers from AEC, MFG and M&E are seeing a huge change in the way things are made.
There are changes:
In Production
In the means and methods for manufacturing with the things like 3D printing and carbon fiber
In Demand
What consumers want – buyers are getting more and more sophisticated and have ever increasing demands
In what the Product is
Whether it’s a cell phone, a building or a movie
And all of these changes are happening simultaneously and is looking similar across our industries.
We see our customers dealing with:
More distributed teams
Connected ecosystems of production and distribution
Greater demand on Capabilities
Meaning they have to know exactly what they’re building before they build it
Our job as a company is to deliver new capabilities to meet these changing demands on our customers.
As a customer, you’ve also got new and greater expectations from the software products and services you use.
Many of our customers are coming to us asking to subscribe to the products they want rather than putting an investment into buying what they want. They want the value of the product without having to buy it. They’re asking for alternative consumption models.
We are being asked to provide products that are personal – it’s not sufficient to have a product that everybody else has anymore. There’s a desire to have the applications and services that you use to be personalized. That the technology you use understands your behaviors, adapts to your behavior and becomes personalized and customized to what you want. Your settings, your preferences knowledge about you.
You want things to be real-time of course getting things a day late doesn't make any sense.
You want things to be immediate this thing about ongoing value we now expect the things we used to get better and better.
A product that doesn't get better and better over time just doesn't make any sense anymore. You want to see ongoing value being delivered in the products you use.
So how do we make this happen? How does Autodesk create the products, services and experiences you’re wanting? We’ve made a fundamental shift over time – flipping our approach on it’s head.
While previously there was great focus on pushing out the products & services we developed to our customers – we’re now putting you in the center of it all. It’s not about any customer… It’s about YOU. You specifically…. we’re working build a better, closer, more collaborative relationship directly with you so that we can provide you want you need, when you need it and how you need it.
Change for Autodesk comes in two parts:
Technology:
You see that expressed:
New products from Autodesk, Inc
Cloud services
How our hero products are evolving
Change in how we offer our products
Need to make it easier for the millions of people who want access to:
Get our products
Use our products
Master our products
These changes will help our customers get to the Future of Making things.
So, continue to be a viable software company, we need to a cloud only software company. And this means making the move to a Subscription only model.
Supporting both a perpetual and Cloud model on an ongoing basis takes a tremendous amount of money, effort and time away from our customers.
That’s why we are making the shift to Subscription:
It will allow us to focus our development in the right way to help meet all the demands placed on our customers today and into the future.
In Feb 1, 2016 we’re taking the first step in that direction….
The ways we design and build the world are changing rapidly. The ways companies and individuals buy and access software is also changing.
You - our customers - have long asked for greater flexibility and more value from their software investments, and this shift allows us to deliver both. Cloud and mobile computing are becoming a requirement in helping enable our customers to more effectively compete and succeed.
Subscription-based offerings are the best way for our customers to thrive in cloud and mobile computing and we intend to be the leaders in this space.
Autodesk is gradually transitioning new software purchases for our products to subscription options only.
Autodesk Subscription is the brand for all Subscription offerings provided by Autodesk.
DETAILS:
In the first phase of this transition, new seats of individual desktop software products, excluding Design and Creation Suites, will generally be available only as a Desktop Subscription after Jan 31, 2016.
The elimination of perpetual licenses only impacts the ability to make new purchases of new perpetual licenses.
Autodesk is doing several things to make the transition to Desktop Subscription as smooth as possible for customers:
Providing the time needed to assess options and make plans by providing a full year of advance notice of changes to come
Allowing Maintenance Subscribers to continue to renew their Maintenance Subscriptions and receive/access the benefits of their Maintenance Subscription
Making Autodesk Account the one place to manage all of your products, subscriptions and services
Providing the ability to lock in your subscription rate by introducing the option of a multi-year Desktop Subscription offering
Continuing to offer Autodesk Design and Creation Suites as a perpetual license
MANUFACTURING SLIDE:
AEC SLIDE:
We have concentrated for the last few years on developing a scalable cloud platform which not only drives our cloud services but also the accessibility for our solutions. The core platforms of our design tools continue to be scaled and matured for better productivity. The most important piece for the connected environment encompasses the extension of our platforms to include personas for early design conception, simulation and fabrication workflows that connect design to construction and into the entire building lifecycle.
Autodesk has been a leader through the 1st two eras, and it is our intention to be there with you through Era 3 and beyond.
By thinking about the implications for your work processes and how your firm will want to evolve to be more competitive,
Let’s figure out a strategy to help move you to the next generation…
M&E SLIDE:
So, let’s review
Scalability- Offering them easy ramp up and down through DTS.
Productivity- Best in class 3d and Comp tools.
Connection- Shotgun/RV allows customer to manage everything from Script to the Distribution of the project. Remember what Liz G said- we’re not selling shotgun to a team, we’re selling it to a facility.
