2. Back Story
• Ever since 1948 the nations who defeated fascism
established the united nations to prevent such human
devastations from ever happening again.
• The united nations charter called for reaffirming human
rights and Equal rights to all Men Women and nations.
• Over the years many new states became members. Few
of these states were there for human rights and
democracy.
• Human Rights and equality were set aside in favor of
political interests $$$

3. Does it Work?
• evaluations of the UN's effectiveness have been mixed. Some
commentators believe the organization to be an important force for
peace and human development, while others have called the
organization ineffective, corrupt, or biased.
• after approval by the Security Council, sends peacekeepers to
regions where armed conflict has recently ceased or paused to
enforce the terms of peace agreements and to discourage
combatants from resuming hostilities.
• the UN does not maintain its own military, peacekeeping forces are
voluntarily provided by member states.
• United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) have been
stationed in the Middle East since 1948, the longest-running active
peacekeeping mission.

4. Does it Work?
• A study by the RAND Corporation in 2005 found the UN to be
successful in two out of three peacekeeping efforts, and found
that seven out of eight UN cases are at peace
• Also in 2005, the Human Security Report documented a decline in
the number of wars, genocides, and human rights abuses since the
end of the Cold War
• Situations in which the UN has not only acted to keep the peace but
also intervened include the Korean War (1950–53) and the
authorization of intervention in Iraq after the Gulf War (1990–91).
• Disagreements in the Security Council about military action and
intervention are seen as having failed to prevent the Bangladesh
genocide in 1971

5. Hit and Miss. (mostly miss)
• The united nations was more effective in the past when
greed and gaining something for doing nothing wasn’t so
popular.
• After understanding how the UN is structured it shouldn’t
surprise you that Iraq, the oppressive regime developing
nuclear weapons in breach of international agreements
was appointed a member of the United Nations nuclear
disarmament committee.
• Iraq is a country that was threatened to destroy a fellow UN
member Israel.
• After the UN body failed to condemn Sudan the UN
secretary-general realized that something was
fundamentally wrong.

6. Utter failure 
• The human rights council which replaced the
Commission still includes many countries that
fail to meet the most minimal standards of
free democracy.

7. Conclusion
In our opinion the UN doesn’t do much good for
anybody, dictators are applauded, murder and
terrorism ignored, and human rights turned into
a travesty.
