From Looking to Making: An Introduction to Graphic DesignOjus Doshi
I delivered a guest lecture to a Public Health class at Brown University. The lecture was an introduction to graphic design as a way of making meaningful form from observations, and some examples and analysis of existing design campaigns that could be applicable to public health students interested in ways to make their messages come to life.

The document is an excerpt from the sketchbook of an architect named Ar. Shashi, and contains several quotes about design and architecture. The quotes discuss how design can be both art and aesthetics, how great architecture contains and stimulates people, and how design is about solving human problems by identifying issues and implementing solutions. A few of the quotes also emphasize that design emerges from selecting simple elements and combining them with love and care for how people will experience a space.

1 Pixel to the Left: Why Visual Design Details MatterEmily Rawitsch
Although we have all heard someone passionately declare, “UX is not UI,” visual design is a fundamental part of the user experience. Good design is in the details. It builds trust. It creates hierarchy of information. It makes buttons look clickable. It has the power to transform a functional experience into a delightful experience.
So how we can ensure that the visual details we design are brought to life as intended? Can moving an object 1 pixel to the left really make a difference? In an attempt to find a common language between designers and developers, we will discuss what details are worth fighting for versus when to let go.

This document provides guidelines for designing effective symbols. It explains that symbols should represent an organization's identity simply and clearly at both large and small scales, as well as in color and black and white. Symbols can be either descriptive, representing what an organization does through images, or symbolic, evoking concepts through metaphor. An effective design process involves researching the organization, brainstorming symbol ideas, developing initial forms and colors, and finalizing the design.
Place in Space (AKA "How to Design A Concept Model")Stephen Anderson
The document summarizes Stephen Anderson's presentation at IA Summit 2016 on creating concept models. It discusses playing a numbers game to add up to 15 as an example of a simple concept model. It then presents magic squares as a more complex concept model and compares it to tic-tac-toe. The document lists various models used to reveal patterns and concepts. It notes that while visual models are useful, the ones provided may not always fit the problem well and few know how to create new visual models. However, it suggests that all visual models are built upon common visual elements that can be used to make sense of complex ideas.

Design thinking is a creative process that focuses on understanding people and their needs. It involves framing challenges, learning about people through observation, co-creating solutions with people, and delivering practical prototypes or strategies. Design thinking requires taking a human-centered, holistic approach that values prototyping ideas quickly through co-creation to allow for failure and improvement. It is a strategic approach that can be applied to challenges beyond product design.
The document provides an overview of different types of design that are relevant for startups. It discusses graphic design, which includes print design, user interface design, and user experience design. Print design involves designing posters, magazines, billboards, and focuses on typography, illustration, and printing processes. Interaction design involves designing digital products and software through user interface design, which focuses on usability, and user experience design, which incorporates various fields like psychology to create seamless interactions between users and products. Industrial design is also mentioned, which involves designing physical products for mass consumption while considering factors like production and how people interact with objects. The document aims to help startups understand different areas of design and how they can be applied.
This document provides tips and advice for navigating a career in user experience (UX) design. It discusses key aspects of UX like defining UX versus UI, conducting user research, creating wireframes and prototypes, and effective project planning and workflow. Specific tips include talking to clients to understand needs, using agile methods, conducting card sorting and user interviews, and the importance of sketching, wireframing and iteration. Recommended books and tools are also provided.

Visual brand language (VBL) is presented as being limited and irrelevant for designers. A new approach called holistic brand language (HBL) is proposed that engages more than just sight by incorporating elements that appeal to all the senses. HBL is described as being more dynamic, accessible, and able to reinforce a brand's values by creating a visceral and lasting impression on people.

The document introduces Roseann Stempinski as an experience designer and strategist. Over her career, she has worked in various design roles including graphic design, brand strategy, industrial design, experience design, and more. She has worked with many different companies across various industries on projects involving packaging design, product design, digital products, design systems, and design strategy/ethnography. The document then discusses different perspectives on what design means, why design is important, common design career paths, and examples of different design roles such as design researcher, design strategist, service designer, industrial designer, digital product designer, user experience designer, art director, graphic designer, and information designer.
This document discusses the principles and philosophy behind Modern UI design at Microsoft. It describes Modern UI as a timeless design style based on established principles like information design and influences from Swiss design, Bauhaus, and wayfinding. The document outlines key elements of Modern UI like its use of color, type, icons, grids, motion and interaction principles. It provides examples of how Modern UI has been applied and discusses best practices for creating distinctly Modern UI experiences.
The document discusses creativity and design. It provides an overview of a course on creativity and design, including its objectives, themes, lessons learned from past years, and main changes for the upcoming year. It emphasizes that creativity and design have strategic importance for organizations.
We have been discussing about and developing tools for design. But, frankly, we haven't discuss about designers enough. In order for preparing for the future, we need to redefine who the designers (not the ones, who can do design) are and what makes them.
This document discusses design missions for agile teams. Design missions are high-level principles that link team member roles to specific design actions and focus areas. They help team members prioritize what is most important to deliver a high quality product experience and say "no" to irrelevant tasks. The document provides an example missions board that lists roles, principles, and actions for each team member to focus on.

INTERACT 2019 'The Science Behind User Experience Design' CourseAsad Ali Junaid
Planning and conducting User Experience (UX) activities in a structured and scientific manner has many advantages. It is important that UX Professionals understand the scientific basis of UX methods and leverage them to enhance the UX of the application being designed. It would also be easier for the UX designer to get a buy-in from the stakeholders if his design recommendations are based in scientific logic and whetted by supporting data. In this course, UX relevant social sciences based scientific concepts and methods will be presented to the audience in a way which is simple to understand and easily to assimilate.

2. What is Design?
Design is the method of putting form and content
together. Design, just as art, has multiple definitions,
there is no single definition. Design can be art. Design
can be aesthetics. Design is so simple, that’s why it is
so complicated. - Paul Rand
3. To design is:
• to simplify
• to assemble
• to order
• to clarify
• to amuse
• to add value
• to illuminate
15. What is UI Design
UI Design is the visual representation of a set of
requirements, needs or ideas serving one or multiple
goals.
16. Design Principles
• Design for Emotions
• Strive for Consistency
• Offer Informative Feedback
• Prevent Errors and Help Recovery
• Recognition rather than Recall
• User Control & Freedom
• Match between system & real world
