The document discusses the three types of claims that can be made in written texts: claims of fact, claims of value, and claims of policy. A claim of fact asserts something that is empirically true. A claim of value expresses a judgment or opinion. A claim of policy argues that an action should be taken. The document provides examples of each type of claim and teaches how to identify the type of claim being made. It emphasizes that understanding different types of claims is important for critically reading texts.

METHODS OF PARAGRAPH DEVELOPMENT
DEVELOPMENT BY CLASSIFICATION
1) Classification is grouping items into categories according to a certain principle.
2) A classification paragraph describes various classes related to one category of things.
3) This is done by grouping items into categories, such as characteristics, types, factors, and other classes or divisions.
For example: Winter Fruitsè apple, orange, tangerine…
You can divide Facebook users, according to the level of their
activity, into the following groups: online zombie, daily visitor, weekender, and “forgot my password” type.
4) The classification paragraph sticks to one basis of classification.
5) In order to be successful at this, you have to be very clear, specific and detailed.
6) Some useful expressions for classification paragraphs are the following:
a kind of
a type of
be divided into
falls under
belongs to
a part of
fits into

associated with
Study the following sample paragraph:
A farmer who decides to concentrate on viable products can choose from four general types of plants: edible, ornamental, raw-material, or shade. Edible plants include grains like rice and corn, fruits like santol and mango, vegetables such as pechay or cabbage, or spices like pepper. On the other hand, ornamentals are all kinds of flowering and non flowering plants used for decoration and landscaping. There are also plants that provide raw materials for other products. Examples of these types are rubber, palm, abaca, maguey, and ramie. The coconut may also belong to this type although the fruit is edible. The last are shade trees, grown primarily to reforest barren areas of mountains. However, some of them are used as ornamentals. Ipil-ipil and narra are the most common shade trees. All these types of plants can be grown profitably, depending upon the soil and climate found in the area.
Explanation: The paragraph shows how plants were classified according to general types.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

In your own understanding, what
is the definition of an implicit
claim? Explicit claim?
What are the differences of
implicit and explicit claims in a
written text?
11. z
EXPLICIT AND IMPLICIT
CLAIMS
CRITICAL READING- necessary for
judging the text’s reliability through the
study of implicit and explicit information.
12. z
EXPLICIT INFORMATION- any idea
that is stated in the text. The text has
clear and obvious meaning no need to
explain.
IMPLICIT INFORMATION-the text is
being suggested through the text’s
details, which serves as clue to get the
right meaning of the text.
13. z
What is a Claim?
A claim is an arguable statement – an idea
that a speaker or writer expects an
audience to accept. A claim is an opinion,
idea, or assertion. Here are some
examples: “I think we should Protest the
Anti-Terror Bill.” “I believe that the present
administration has no concrete plans to
fight COVID-19”. “We need
Modernization.”
14. z
The word claim comes from the Latin word
clamare, which means “to cry out, shout.
Hence, with the definition of a claim, this
can then be argued, verified, or disproved.
A claim deals with the searching for
agreement from the audience to agree with
the statement or discourse. It also
involves anticipation from the audience’s
agreement and anxiousness that they
might disagree with.
15. z
Three (3) types of claim in a
Written Text
The claim of fact. A claim asserts some
empirical truth. It is an assertion of:
• A condition that has existed exists or will exist.
• The truth of an assertion to be ascertained by an
event. The speaker will give information and offer
an explanation that characterized the events.
• An argument with strong evidence presented as a
reason for the arguer's belief in the claim.
16. z
Examples:
1. Action research is conducted to
respond to the needs of the students.
2 Illegal mining has already become an
issue in the Philippines.
3. School is the most important part of
education.
17. z . A claim of value. A claim asserts judgment. It
is an assertion of:
• Look for keywords that are a matter of judgment
rather than fact, such as: good, well, kind, useful,
desirable, etc.
• Authors offer reasons for their judgment, with the
ultimate goal of getting the reader's agreement with
the reasons rather than comparing to the fact that
establishes assent to the claim.
• A claim is based on things we like or dislike. Hence,
it deals with the goal of what value us most.
18. z
• The authors' argument is based on
judgment or value and does not necessarily
carry out
facts. Disagreements overvalue importance
for us to determine how one presented his or
her point over certain belief.
• An argument usually gets the other person's
approval because the claim's underlying
value proves to be acceptable as a public
good.
19. z
Examples:
1. Living in a city is more productive than
living in the countryside.
2. Saying "OPO" is the highest form of
respect.
3. Staying with a family with limited resources
is more valuable than working abroad.
20. z
. A claim of Policy. A claim asserts that an
action should be taken.
• Be careful to call that some actions be taken.
• Take note of the keywords "should," "ought," or
"must. These words may not be present all the time,
but the author's purpose is usually to call for an action
to be taken if they are.
• The most difficult thing in an argument is to decide
whether we should take action or not in any of the
claims.
• An argument usually turns on whether the reasons
for taking action compensates for the possible costs
of taking action.
21. z
Examples:
1. Deforestation should be eradicated in the
Philippines.
2. The government should pursue scholarship
programs, especially to those identified
marginalized sectors affected by COVID-19.
3. Child Protection Policy should be
implemented in the school system.

suicidal thoughts on the victim.
Claim of value: The gravity of a lie is
dependable on the act committed.
