 With the increasing need of computers, the manufacturers
have brought a range of varieties of computers in the
market, which has made very difficult to classify them.
However, we can classify the computers in three ways.
 The purpose for which the computer is used.
 The type of data the computer processes.
 The capacity of work the computer does.
 When the computers are classified according to purpose
they serve, they can be of two types, General Purpose
Computers and Specific Purpose Computers. A General-
Purpose computer is a machine that can be used generally
for a variety of tasks whereas a specific purpose computer is
designed to handle a specific problem or to perform a
specific task. When we classify the computers according to
type of data they handle, then they are of three types;
 Analog Computes,
 Digital Computers
 Hybrid Computers.
Analog Computer:
 Analog computer measures or process data
in a continuous form. It represents
quantities like speed, weight, temperatures
etc.
 A watch or a clock is an analog device.
Digital Computer:
 Digital Computer process data in the form
of values ordigits or numbers. They
perform calculations and make logical
decisions.
Hybrid Computer:
 Hybrid Computer is the combination of properties
of both analog and digital computers. The third
way of classifying computers is based upon the
capacity of work they do. It means their
processing power or speed, functional capabilities
and size of memory etc. If we classify computers
by keeping in mind their sizes and ranges of
power and capabilities.
