OF URINE SPECIMEN

TYPES
◦ ROUTINE URINE ANALYSIS
◦ CLEAR CATCH OR MIDSTREAM URINE
◦ STERILE SPECIMEN
◦ 24 HOURS URINE SPECIMEN
ROUTINE URINALYIS
◦ STERILE SPECIMEN IS NOT REQUIRED
◦ URINE IS COLLECTED FROM BED PANS, URINALS, OR
RECEPTACLES
◦ AVOID CONTAMINATION WITH STOOL
◦ CARE TO BE TAKEN IF WOMEN IS MENSURATING
◦ PROCEDURE
◦ USING ASCEPTIC TECHNIQUES POUR THE URINE INTO AN
APPROPRIATE CONTAINER
◦ LABEL IT WITH PATIENTS NAME, HOSPITAL NUMBER,DATE, TIME
OF COLLECTION
◦ SEND TO LABORATORY
CLEAR CATCH OR MID STREAM URINE
◦ This means that the patient voids and discards a small amount of urine:
continues voiding in a sterile specimen container to collect the urine: stops
voiding into the container: removes container and continues voiding; then
discard the urine that is remaining in the bladder
◦ The first small amount of urine helps to flush away any organisms near the
meatus.
◦ Additionally, midstream urine is most characteristics of urine that the body is
producing
◦ This method allows the specimen which is not contaminated from external
sources to be obtained without catheterization
PROCEDURE

COTTON BALLS
LABORATORY REQUSITION FORM
GLOVES
PROCEDURE
◦ Perform Hand hygiene
◦ Wear gloves
◦ Instruct the patient to clean the urethral area. This will prevent the external bacteria from
entering the specimen.
◦ The female should wipe from front to back to avoid contaminating the vaginal and urethral
area from the anal area. She should clean each area with a separate cotton ball.
◦ Males should cleanse the penis with cotton balls
◦ Instruct the patient to void a small amount of urine into the toilet to rinse out urethra, void
midstream urine into the specimen cup and the last of the stream into the toilet.
◦ Complete the lab forms, label the specimen and send to lab.
◦ Wash hands
◦ Record the procedure
◦ Note for abnormal appearance
24 HOURS URINE SPECIMEN
◦ A 24 HOURS URINE SPECIMEN ALWAYS BEGINS WITH AN EMPTY
BLADDER SO THAT THE URINE COLLECTED IS NOT “LEFT OVER”
FROM THE PREVIOUS HOURS.
◦ THIS SPECIMEN SHOWS THE TOTAL AMOUNT OF WASTES THE
KIDNEYS ARE ELIMINATING AND THE AMOUNT OF EACH.
◦ SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENTS
◦ LARGE, CLEAN BOTTLE WITH A CAP
◦ MEASURING GRADUATE
◦ BEDPAN OR URINAL
◦ REFRIDGERATED STORAGE AREA
◦ GLOVES
PROCEDURE
◦ Label the bottle with patients identification data, collection starting and ending
time
◦ Instruct the patient to void all urine into a bedpan or urinal
◦ Measure each specimen of urine voided and pour into refrigerated bottle
◦ Wash hands before and after each collection
◦ Record the amount on the intake output sheet
◦ Exactly 24 hours after beginning the collection, ask the patient to void . This
will complete the specimen collection
◦ Send the bottle and laboratory request form to lab.
STERILE SPECIEMEN
◦ COLLECTING URINE SPECIMEN FROM CATHETER
COLLECTING FROM A CATHETER
◦ EQUIPMENTS NEEDED
◦ Container with label
◦ Disposable gloves
◦ Sprit swabs
◦ 10 to 20 ml syringe with 21-25 gauge needle
◦ Clamp
◦ Pen and lab forms
PROCEDURE
◦ Assemble equipment's
◦ Label the container
◦ Explain the procedure to the patient
◦ Perform hand hygiene
◦ Clamp the tubing's
• You should not clamp more than 15 minutes
• Cleanse the aspiration port with a spirit swab or another disinfectant
• Withdrawing urine:
Insert needle into the aspiration port
Withdraw sufficient amount of urine gently into the syringe
• Transfer the urine to the labeled container
• The container should be clean for analysis and sterile for culture
• Unclamp the catheter
• Dispose used equipment's
• Sent the specimen to lab immediately
• Remove gloves and perform hand hygiene
• Document the procedure in the designated place.
COLLECTING URINE CULTURE
◦ COLLECTING URINE CULTURE IS THE PROCESS THAT OBTAINS SPECIMEN OF URINE WITH
STERILE TECHNIQUE.
◦ EQUIPMENTS NEEDED.
◦ Sterile gloves
◦ Sterile culture bottle with label
◦ Sterile kidney tray
◦ Bed pan if needed
◦ Paper tissues
◦ Lab forms
PROCEDURE
◦ Assemble equipment's and check the specimen form with clients name, date and
content of urine analysis
◦ Label the container
◦ Explain the procedure and provide privacy
◦ Instruct the client
◦ Instruct the client to clean the perineum with soap and water
◦ Open sterilized container and leave the cover facing inside up
◦ Instruct the client to void into sterile kidney tray or sterilized container with a wide
mouth
◦ Remove the specimen immediately after the client has voided. Obtain 30-50 ml at
midstream point of voiding. Emphasize that the first and last portion of urine should
be discarded.
◦ Close the container securely without touching inside of the cover
◦ Dispose off used equipment's or clean them.
◦ Remove gloves and perform hand hygiene
◦ Send specimen to the lab
◦ Document the procedure.
