TYPE OF
SENTENCES
WHAT IS A SENTENCE?
• A group of words which expresses a complete thought.
They most contain a SUBJECT AND A VERB.
SIMPLE SENTENCE
• Is a sentence with one independent clause.
• Expresses a complete thouhgt.
For example :
The train was late.
Joe waited for the bus.
I love simple sentences.
COMPOUND SENTENCE
• Contains two or more independent clauses.
For example:
I really want to go to work, but I’m too lazy to do it.
Everyone was busy today, so I went to the movies alone.
Should I dye my hair red, or should I dye my hair green ?
Emely made the sugar cookies; Khatlin decorated them.
TIP:
They can be joined with a
coordinating conjuction
or with a semicolon ( ; ).
COMPLEX SENTENCE
• A sentence that contains one independent clause and one or more dependent
clauses.
For example:
The students are studying because they have a test tomorrow.
Because I paid attention, I got an A on Nahum test and he was so proud.
After I graduated from college, I wanted to travel, but my parents refused to let me go.
Many people enjoyed the movie; however, Vanessa did not.
They can be joined with a
coordinating conjuction
and with a subordinating
conjuction.
COMPOUND-COMPLEX SENTENCE
• Contains two or more independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses.
For example:
Although I like to go camping, I haven’t had the time to go lately , and I haven’t found anyone
to go with.
We decided that the movie was too violent, but our children who like to watch action movies,
thought we were wrong.
