Introduction
• Sentences are classified into four types based
on their structure:
• 1. Simple Sentence
• 2. Compound Sentence
• 3. Complex Sentence
• 4. Compound-Complex Sentence
Simple Sentence
• • A sentence with only one independent
clause.
• • Expresses a complete thought.
• Examples:
• ✔ She reads books.
• ✔ The dog barked loudly.
Compound Sentence
• • A sentence with two or more independent
clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction.
• • FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so).
• Examples:
• ✔ I wanted to play cricket, but it started
raining.
• ✔ He studied hard, so he passed the exam.
Complex Sentence
• • A sentence with one independent clause
and at least one dependent clause.
• • Uses subordinating conjunctions (because,
although, since, when).
• Examples:
• ✔ I stayed home because it was raining.
• ✔ Although he was tired, he finished his work.
Compound-Complex Sentence
• • A sentence with two or more independent
clauses and one or more dependent clauses.
• Examples:
• ✔ I like to read, but I don’t always have time
because I’m busy.
• ✔ She smiled, and he waved as the train left
the station.
Comparison of Types
• • Simple → 1 independent clause
• • Compound → 2+ independent clauses
• • Complex → 1 independent + 1+ dependent
clauses
• • Compound-Complex → 2+ independent + 1+

Exercise 1: Identify the Sentence

• 1. She went to the park.
