Juan de Oñate was granted permission to lead an expedition to settle New Mexico in 1598. He established the first permanent European settlement in what is now Santa Fe with 500 colonists. However, Spanish interest in further exploring and settling northern New Spain waned after Oñate's later expedition searching for gold and cities northeast of present-day Texas failed. Settlement of New Mexico by the Spanish then expanded slowly northward over time.
