Digium 'Demo & Eggs' Breakfast Presentation slides, as shown at WebRTC World III on November 21, 2013.
These slides we used in a presentation which also featured a live demo of a WebRTC-enabled Asterisk appliance (based on a Raspberry Pi just for fun) serving a web page that contained the JsSIP soft phone.
Audience members were able to connect to our WiFi network and use Chrome or Firefox to browse to this page, and them make a call to each other, to a Digium phone, to hear a message from Allison (THE Voice of Asterisk) or to go into a conference call with each other.

Alberto Gonzalez Trastoy, was among the speakers at Agora’s Real-Time Engagement 2020 Conference. His presentation was about what makes building a live video application more complicated than a regular web app. Isn’t WebRTC supposed to handle everything for you? Alberto describes some of the unexpected nuances and challenges a web developer may encounter building real-time engagement and communications applications. This includes networking, interoperability, scalability and security. He also discusses other complexities in building WebRTC applications and offers tools and alternatives to solve them.

In a tribute to Romero's masterpiece, we will examine the resurgence of vulnerabilities we all thought dead. As soon as a security expert looks at the firmware and code of IoT devices, 2017 may as well be 1997: format string bugs, basic stack overflows and hardcoded credentials arise. Zero-days are actually forever-days. We will look at a number of real world cases of industrial and consumer IoT devices we tested and broke, and besides analyzing the most common and most outstanding findings, we will wonder why we seem unable to kill these pests once and forever.

Extreme network's embedded WingOS (Originally created by Motorola) is an operating system used in several wireless devices such as access points and controllers. This OS is being used in Motorola devices, Zebra devices and Extreme network's devices. This research started focusing in an access point widely used in many Aircrafts by several worldwide airlines but ended up in something bigger in terms of devices affected as this embedded operating system is not only used in AP's for Aircrafts but also in Healthcare, Government, Transportation, Smart cities, small to big enterprises... and more. Based on public information, we will see how vulnerable devices are actively used (outdoors) in big cities around the world. But also in Universities, Hotels,Casinos, Big companies, Mines, Hospitals and provides the Wi-Fi access for places such as the New york City Subway. In this presentation we will show with technical details how several critical vulnerabilities were found in this embedded OS. First we will introduce some internals and details about the OS and then we will show the techniques used to reverse engineering the mipsN32 ABI code for the Cavium Octeon processor. It will be discussed how some code was emulated to detect how a dynamic password is generated with a cryptographic algorithm for a root shell backdoor. Besides, it will be shown how some protocols used by some services were reverse engineered to find unauthenticated heap and stack overflow vulnerabilities that could be exploitable trough Wireless or Ethernet connection. This OS also uses a proprietary layer 2/3 protocol called MiNT. This protocol is used for communication between WingOS devices through VLAN or IP. This protocol was also reverse engineered and remote heap/stack overflow vulnerabilities were found on services using this protocol and will be shown. As a demonstration, 2 devices will be used to exploit a remote stack overflow chaining several vulnerabilities as the attacker could do inside an aircraft (or other scenarios) through the Wi-Fi. As there are not public shellcodes for mipsN32 ABI, the particularities of creating a Shellcode for mipsN32 ABI will be also discussed.

Radio-frequency (RF) remote controllers are widely used in multiple industrial applications like manufacturing, construction and transportation. Cranes, drillers and diggers, among others, are commonly equipped with RF controllers, which have become the weakest link in safety-critical IIoT applications. Our security assessment revealed a lack of important security features at different levels, with vendors using obscure proprietary protocols instead of standards. As a consequence, this technology appeared to be vulnerable to attacks like replay, command injection, e-stop abuse, malicious repairing and reprogramming. Together with ZDI, we ran into a 6-months responsible disclosure process and then released 10 security advisories. In this presentation, we share the findings of our research and make use of demos to discuss the problems in detail. We conclude providing recommendations for all parties involved in the life-cycle of these devices, from vendors to users and system integrators.

Major Linux distributions have a problem with WebKit security. Whereas major desktop browsers push automatic security updates directly to users on a regular basis so that users don’t have to worry about updates, Linux users are dependent on their distributions to release updates. Well over 100 vulnerabilities that could allow remote code execution were fixed in WebKit last year, so getting updates out to users is critical. This talk examines the disconnect between how the WebKit project handles security issues upstream and how different major distributions do (or do not) handle security issues, shows that WebKit security issues have widespread impact even for users who do not use a WebKit-based web browser, and discusses the security consequences of the split between the original WebKit API and WebKit2.

My presentation from WebRTC Global Summit 2015 in London, where I went through the current market status of WebRTC, trying to give glimpses towards where we are headed.
When people think about WebRTC, they think about video calls inside a web browser. WebRTC is much more than that. WebRTC can be used to create fundamentally better experiences by embedding live, peer-to-peer communications in SaaS products, mobile apps, and websites. But what is the state of WebRTC today? What does it take for a business to really reap the benefits?

Improving performance by changing the rules from fast to SPDYCotendo
SPDY was proposed by Google back in November 2009 to reduce the latency and load time of web pages. It was provided as part of the Chromium open-source project and is enabled in Chrome by default.
We at Cotendo took on the challenge, implemented the server side, and extended our proxies to support SPDY, providing SPDY to HTTP “translation”. Guess what? It really speeds things up. But like all new good things, there is still work to do. We will share insights from our implementation, optimization of SSL-based traffic and present performance data both from Google’s and our customers’ deployment.
What’s next?
We believe the introduction of SPDY as a new application layer presents a unique opportunity to rethink web design concepts and front-end-optimization (FEO) techniques. We will discuss some optimizations we developed and suggest some guidelines on how you can approach these new types of optimizations.

Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.
