E4 is a British television channel aimed at audiences aged 16-34. It broadcasts comedy shows and was originally a subscription channel but became available on Freeview in 2005, increasing its audience and advertising revenue. The channel's idents are strange but comedic, featuring a purple robot mascot. They reference youth culture through references and varying tones from calm to crazy.

E4
E4 is a British channel which was launched in 2001 which was introduced to television by Channel Four
Television Corporation whom also own Channel 4, Film 4, More 4 and many others. The E stands for
Entertainment as this channel is mainly based on broadcasting comedy shows such as The Goldberg's, How I
met Your mother, The Big Bang Theory and many others with an audience of 16-34 year olds. The channel
was first introduced as a subscription channel but in 2005 was available on Freeview which allowed an
increase in advertisement revenue due to a larger audience being allowed to view. The biggest shows for the
channel was The Imbetweeners in 2010 and The Big Bang Theory in 2012, 2015 and 2016.
The current idents for E4 are very strange but comedic because of how
random they are. They all theme there logo/mascot who is the purple
robot which is also there logo being purple instantly relates you to E4
since its always themed purple which is because purple combines the
calm blue and the energetic red and can also be associated with
creativity and peace. This can be seen in the idents with some being
quite slow simple idents which are peaceful and calm but then some
being quite crazy with more happening. The channel is on 24/7 so has
a variety of idents with them being used with there full length and
some shorter versions. There are also themes of time shown in the
idents being day and night which shows they can use the idents at
specific times to relate the audience to there current time. There Is
references being used with slang being used (Gilf Ident, boot lane ident
and café chunder ident) which is recognised as there audience is from
teenage years (16) all the way to 34.

BBC THREE
BBC Three was a British television channel when it was first launched
in 2003 to replace BBC Choice but was ended for television in 2016
and now is BBC Three (Online) where you can still watch via there
website as they thought since there audience is 16-34 that by moving
to the internet would have a stronger attraction for a younger
audience whom have a growing up around the internet. Its biggest
hits of the channel being Torchwood, Match Of The Day etc. it has
been clearly seen that the change from television to internet has
meant a new ident has been made for the channel along with a new
logo which is more modern with black, grey and pink as there new
colour theme which I feel has made it more suitable look for what the
channel is. The new idents are completely computer generated.
Unlike its rivals such as E4, BBC Three have a majority of what they
are showing being originated from the United Kingdom.

4. RESEARCH 2013 idents current idents
Itv2 is a 24hour service television channel broadcasted in the UK.
It first launched in 1998 and is available through digital, Freeview
etc. The channel is know for its American programming such as
Gossip Girl and The Vampire Diaries but is also valued for its
reshowing's of coronation street, Emmerdale. The most recent
thrive for the channel has been the Love Island show hitting the
youth audience extremely and taken over media when it airs. The
most recent idents for ITV 2 have the strongest connection
between what the channel is about giving a clearer ident as all the
recent idents are puns which are in place to try and connect to
there younger audience. The 2013 idents are much different from
the current idents as they are more just simple nice visual shots
which didn’t have as much connection with the audience and
what the channel is about but is now got a connection. The logo
for ITV 2 is the same as ITV but with a 2 on the end which gives
visual connection instantly and is used within all the idents from
the current and past.

5. RESEARCH
Channel 4 was introduced into the British
Television channels in 1982 being self funded
through ad-revenue. it was established to
provide a fourth channel to television along side
with BBC 1,2 And ITV. They also have a target
audience of 16-34 with a range of shows to
choose from such as a very famous American
series ‘Friends’. The idents used by Channel 4 are
very abstract and coordinated to be linked to the
time as the abstract motion of the 3D objects is
moving clockwise with spaces of where the
hands of the clock would be which tell the time
for when they are played e.g. shows 7pm within
the shaping and is shown in real time at 7pm.
There is also lots of different bright colours being
used but with strong main darks such as blacks
which can link to the younger audience as black
is very in right now for what people wear which
without knowing can make people link and be
appealed as that colour is popular.

7. concept
My concept is a youth channel which will have content that will be
suitable not just for the youth but older audience too. This will be done
by implementing a deeper message into the ident. This will make the
older audience have a more engaging time when watching it as
generally the older audience has more knowledge and has a stronger
attention to things when watching things so by adding this feature will
make it more entertaining for a wider spread audience. I have felt this
is necessary for the youth channels as they are normally aiming for an
audience between 16 to 34 but they often only meet this target for the
16-25s so I feel by adding in the message to the ident will be that
missing piece.

8. Motion graphics & compositing techniques
Within my ident I will be using lots of simples still camera shots from
lots of different distances and angles (long, short distance and high, low
angles). I will then use other techniques within these shots such as
motion graphics and animated graphics. This is to create a more diverse
set of idents including multiple techniques and styles. I will achieve
these effects through using Photoshop and After Effects where I can
within photoshop edit imagery and create things which can then be
implemented within After Effects where I will edit the film footage and
implement the effects (Null objects and adding to the motion graphics)
and do the major post production work.

9. Idea generation
I have been thinking of making my ident look very futuristic and feature things which are not actually possible (yet). I have noticed that
the modern trend for ideas of what the future is to hold is teleporting, the idea of being able to move through some strange portal and it
take you to a completely different place or sometimes new time zone (future or the past). This is being seen in popular TV shows such as
Rick and Morty and Stranger Things which have a very similar audience to what I would. This is why I thought it would be a good idea to
feature portals of some sort in my ident as it is futuristic and draws in my target audience. I have also used my research to help me decide
on how I want to do my ident and by looking into E4 and Channel 4’s idents I like how they use a colour scheme throughout to create a
more stand out appearance. I also like the abstract random style to them which clearly show the branding of the channel but in a clear
and cool looking way.

10. Logo designs
Keeping to a simple look like other logos being used by already existing channels the design is geometric to fit the name ‘grid’
which can be imagine being very square based with all straight lines. With a colour scheme of black, white and grey to keep a
neutral feel and trying to keep a gender equal scheme since the channel will not aim to hit a specific gender audience. I will be
only using one of the designs keeping it simple and to create an ident which can be recognised for being simple, not having to
see multiple logos.
I decided to change the design slightly from the original 4 and going with the
first design but changing the font style and made a grid cut out to connect
the squares to the big square and be cut outs for where the text is so it is
completely black keeping it as neutral as possible but this will change for
within the idents as colour will be used. I felt the grid created lots of shapes
giving lots of corners and edges giving a feel of channel 4 with it looking
more abstract which suits the style of the channel.

11. Using my logo design with the purple, yellow and blue I want each ident to feature someone walking into
One of the colour shapes warping them to another location. This would be done by using a green screen
with the correct lighting and acting to then post product with after effects to create the effects of the
person walking into a blue, purple or yellow cube or square. I would then need to go out into 3 locations
where the person would walk towards a nice view then the camera would do a 180 and show what they
are looking at which would be done 3 times with 3 different people to create 3 short ident clips which
would have a strange fantasy effect. The people would act like everything that is happening is normal
not showing emotion as the focus of the ident is not the actors but the animation of the coloured portals
and the nice views the camera shows with lots of different camera angles and shots. I would also add in
own sound effects throughout the idents to create it a tense and dramatic with the warping sounds
through the portals and the views. To create the look of a teleportation or warp I will need to use a green
screen so that I can get the actors and be able to change there appearance in the background. This
means I can make the actor fade out without anything else in the visual which would make the look
of them slowly disappearing.
I have designed an idea of what short animation could be to introduce the ident so that straight away the
branding of the channel Is shown. I decided to only use the shapes from my logo to design a strange
artistic look which was inspired by the Channel 4 idents I researched upon.

13. The first storyboard only shows the 3 idents at there basics as they are shown in 3 shots, this is to show the idea I have of the story
being someone simply starting at location A and getting to location B through a portal. The final ident will be filmed with a lot more
shots as I will be changing shot distance constantly to try make it seem fast pass even though the fast cuts will be showing the same
scenes from multiples angles. This is so I can show the background in detail (scene) as well as the foreground (character, portal). The
second story board is a more detailed showing of what one of the idents would look like but is still now showing know where near as
much detail as the final will have. It shows that I will be changing between view of the camera completely at the end of the ident. I
chose to make it go first person as the ident is meant to show mood from changing place to place. Ident 1 shows the typical day
dream of the mind getting bored in class and imagining something nicer which is shown in the nice forest he goes too. Ident 2 shows
loneliness as he is on top of a mountain with no one or sound around him to the middle of a city where he is surrounded by people
and noise. Ident 3 shows fear as the ident starts neutral within a shopping centre to him being in a dark gloomy night. This is why I
thought first person would be good to add in as you are viewing the character and the ident is about the emotion of that character. I
will also feature the short animation to the end of the idents, as well as the logo within the top right of the ident whilst it is playing as
it is important to brand the channel as people are watching. The sound will also change when it changes to the first person
perspective to the mic on the camera only with no other added sound to emphasise seeing through the characters eyes.

14. Final Ident
I have chose to produce ident 1 as I feel this will be the strongest one for me to make within the
area I live and the locations/equipment I have access too. I feel this will be my strongest out of the 3
to make as I can use the college classrooms/greenscreen rooms to get the footage for the first part
of the ident and have access to local forests/woods to film the second half. Filming in more local
areas will also help he crew with transport as it will be closer and save time on travel, increasing the
time we have to film which will have effect on a better overall production. As it may seem like I am
trying to explain how I have taken the easy option, well I haven’t as they were all going to be a
challenge to make with them all using same visual effects and camera techniques. The main
difference is the location which is worth going for a classroom/woods based one compared to a
mountain to a city the access to that is much harder and with ident 1 giving only benefits I don’t see
why id choose either of the others. I found that ident 2 would have been the most difficult
capturing good sound as I would be going from the mountain which is usually very windy too a very
loud city and as I want there to be quite clear crisp nice sound being used throughout the ident with
the microphones I will be using ident 1 would be better then ident 2. the 3rd ident would have also
been difficult as I would have to film in the dark for the last location as I wanted that one to go the
night period but again with equipment, sticking to better lighting will benefit the quality of the final
ident. I also found that since my crew is aged 17-18 then whom I choose to act will fit within a
classroom environment for the first location which makes more sense again adding for more reason
why it is best to do ident 1.

15. sound
I will be using the ambient sound of the raw footage to give the main attention to the visuals but will also be
adding other sound. I will be using no copyright sound effects from the internet for the portal. I will record
some of the raw footage with a mic separate for things that I want to be emphasised such as going from a quiet
classroom with just the portal noise to the forest with the wind in the trees and wildlife. This will help show the
meaning of the ident (quiet is normally boring compared to somewhere with lots of noise which can show
business which isn’t boring even if it sound In the environment). I will also be using a sci-fi backing track which
will run from the beginning to the end giving an on edge feel as I want my ident to quite suspense, which will
also mean I wont be using continuity announcer as it would be distracting and would disrupt the mood. I think
it is best that I keep added sound as little as I can as I don’t want to over do it and have too many sounds going
on. It would be nice to have some very quiet piano piece with a sinister creepy feel to again increase the
tension of the viewing as a piano could be used within the editing technique where you can sink a loud tone
with a transition making the music fit more with the filming.
