The Turkish education system follows a 4+4+4 structure. It has four levels: pre-primary, primary, lower secondary, and upper secondary education. Pre-primary education is optional for ages 3-5. Primary education for ages 6-9 and lower secondary for ages 10-13 are compulsory. Upper secondary, or high school, for ages 14-18 also became compulsory in 2012. Students must pass exams after high school to enroll in higher education, which is mostly 4-year university programs. Turkey has 196 total universities.
