TeraCache: Efficient Caching Over Fast Storage Devices
This talk will introduce TeraCache, a new scalable cache for Spark that avoids both garbage collection (GC) and serialization overheads. Existing Spark caching options incur either significant GC overheads for large managed heaps over persistent memory or significant serialization overheads to place objects off-heap on large storage devices. Our analysis shows that: (1) serialization increases execution time by up to 30% and (2) caching on the managed heap increases GC time by 20%. In addition, these overheads become worse as datasets grow.

Monte Zweben Co-Founder and CEO of Splice Machine, will discuss how to use HBase co-processors to build an ANSI-99 SQL database with 1) parallelization of SQL execution plans, 2) ACID transactions with snapshot isolation and 3) consistent secondary indexing.
Transactions are critical in traditional RDBMSs because they ensure reliable updates across multiple rows and tables. Most operational applications require transactions, but even analytics systems use transactions to reliably update secondary indexes after a record insert or update.
In the Hadoop ecosystem, HBase is a key-value store with real-time updates, but it does not have multi-row, multi-table transactions, secondary indexes or a robust query language like SQL. Combining SQL with a full transactional model over HBase opens a whole new set of OLTP and OLAP use cases for Hadoop that was traditionally reserved for RDBMSs like MySQL or Oracle. However, a transactional HBase system has the advantage of scaling out with commodity servers, leading to a 5x-10x cost savings over traditional databases like MySQL or Oracle.
HBase co-processors, introduced in release 0.92, provide a flexible and high-performance framework to extend HBase. In this talk, we show how we used HBase co-processors to support a full ANSI SQL RDBMS without modifying the core HBase source. We will discuss how endpoint transactions are used to serialize SQL execution plans over to regions so that computation is local to where the data is stored. Additionally, we will show how observer co-processors simultaneously support both transactions and secondary indexing.
The talk will also discuss how Splice Machine extended the work of Google Percolator, Yahoo Labs’ OMID, and the University of Waterloo on distributed snapshot isolation for transactions. Lastly, performance benchmarks will be provided, including full TPC-C and TPC-H results that show how Hadoop/HBase can be a replacement of traditional RDBMS solutions.Hadoop engineering bo_f_final

Whilst HBase is the most logical answer for use cases requiring random, realtime read/write access to Big Data, it may not be so trivial to design applications that make most of its use, neither the most simple to operate. Rapid Home Provisioning
Rapid Home Provisioning is a new feature in Oracle Grid Infrastructure 12c R2 that provides a simplified way to provision and patch Oracle software and databases. It uses a centralized management server and golden images stored on ACFS to deploy pre-packaged and patched Oracle homes to client nodes. Administrators can easily create working copies of golden images, deploy databases from the working copies, and seamlessly patch databases by moving them to a working copy based on a newer patched golden image with a single command.
Floating on a RAFT: HBase Durability with Apache Ratis
In a world with a myriad of distributed storage systems to choose from, the majority of Apache HBase clusters still rely on Apache HDFS. Theoretically, any distributed file system could be used by HBase. One major reason HDFS is predominantly used are the specific durability requirements of HBase's write-ahead log (WAL) and HDFS providing that guarantee correctly. However, HBase's use of HDFS for WALs can be replaced with sufficient effort.
This talk will cover the design of a "Log Service" which can be embedded inside of HBase that provides a sufficient level of durability that HBase requires for WALs. Apache Ratis (incubating) is a library-implementation of the RAFT consensus protocol in Java and is used to build this Log Service. We will cover the design choices of the Ratis Log Service, comparing and contrasting it to other log-based systems that exist today. Next, we'll cover how the Log Service "fits" into HBase and the necessary changes to HBase which enable this. Finally, we'll discuss how the Log Service can simplify the operational burden of HBase.

TeraCache: Efficient Caching Over Fast Storage Devices
This talk will introduce TeraCache, a new scalable cache for Spark that avoids both garbage collection (GC) and serialization overheads. Existing Spark caching options incur either significant GC overheads for large managed heaps over persistent memory or significant serialization overheads to place objects off-heap on large storage devices. Our analysis shows that: (1) serialization increases execution time by up to 30% and (2) caching on the managed heap increases GC time by 20%. In addition, these overheads become worse as datasets grow.

Monte Zweben Co-Founder and CEO of Splice Machine, will discuss how to use HBase co-processors to build an ANSI-99 SQL database with 1) parallelization of SQL execution plans, 2) ACID transactions with snapshot isolation and 3) consistent secondary indexing.
Transactions are critical in traditional RDBMSs because they ensure reliable updates across multiple rows and tables. Most operational applications require transactions, but even analytics systems use transactions to reliably update secondary indexes after a record insert or update.
In the Hadoop ecosystem, HBase is a key-value store with real-time updates, but it does not have multi-row, multi-table transactions, secondary indexes or a robust query language like SQL. Combining SQL with a full transactional model over HBase opens a whole new set of OLTP and OLAP use cases for Hadoop that was traditionally reserved for RDBMSs like MySQL or Oracle. However, a transactional HBase system has the advantage of scaling out with commodity servers, leading to a 5x-10x cost savings over traditional databases like MySQL or Oracle.
HBase co-processors, introduced in release 0.92, provide a flexible and high-performance framework to extend HBase. In this talk, we show how we used HBase co-processors to support a full ANSI SQL RDBMS without modifying the core HBase source. We will discuss how endpoint transactions are used to serialize SQL execution plans over to regions so that computation is local to where the data is stored. Additionally, we will show how observer co-processors simultaneously support both transactions and secondary indexing.
The talk will also discuss how Splice Machine extended the work of Google Percolator, Yahoo Labs’ OMID, and the University of Waterloo on distributed snapshot isolation for transactions. Lastly, performance benchmarks will be provided, including full TPC-C and TPC-H results that show how Hadoop/HBase can be a replacement of traditional RDBMS solutions.Hadoop engineering bo_f_final

Whilst HBase is the most logical answer for use cases requiring random, realtime read/write access to Big Data, it may not be so trivial to design applications that make most of its use, neither the most simple to operate. As it depends/integrates with other components from Hadoop ecosystem (Zookeeper, HDFS, Spark, Hive, etc) or external systems ( Kerberos, LDAP), and its distributed nature requires a "Swiss clockwork" infrastructure, many variables are to be considered when observing anomalies or even outages. Adding to the equation there's also the fact that HBase is still an evolving product, with different release versions being used currently, some of those can carry genuine software bugs. On this presentation, we'll go through the most common HBase issues faced by different organisations, describing identified cause and resolution action over my last 5 years supporting HBase to our heterogeneous customer base.

Rapid Home Provisioning
Rapid Home Provisioning is a new feature in Oracle Grid Infrastructure 12c R2 that provides a simplified way to provision and patch Oracle software and databases. It uses a centralized management server and golden images stored on ACFS to deploy pre-packaged and patched Oracle homes to client nodes. Administrators can easily create working copies of golden images, deploy databases from the working copies, and seamlessly patch databases by moving them to a working copy based on a newer patched golden image with a single command.
Floating on a RAFT: HBase Durability with Apache Ratis
In a world with a myriad of distributed storage systems to choose from, the majority of Apache HBase clusters still rely on Apache HDFS. Theoretically, any distributed file system could be used by HBase. One major reason HDFS is predominantly used are the specific durability requirements of HBase's write-ahead log (WAL) and HDFS providing that guarantee correctly. However, HBase's use of HDFS for WALs can be replaced with sufficient effort.
This talk will cover the design of a "Log Service" which can be embedded inside of HBase that provides a sufficient level of durability that HBase requires for WALs. Apache Ratis (incubating) is a library-implementation of the RAFT consensus protocol in Java and is used to build this Log Service. We will cover the design choices of the Ratis Log Service, comparing and contrasting it to other log-based systems that exist today. Next, we'll cover how the Log Service "fits" into HBase and the necessary changes to HBase which enable this. Finally, we'll discuss how the Log Service can simplify the operational burden of HBase.

Eero Teerikorpi - founder and CEO, Continuent - is a 7-time serial entrepreneur who has more than 30 years of high-tech management and enterprise software experience. Eero has been in the MySQL marketplace virtually since day one, from the early 2000s. Eero has held top management positions at various cross-Atlantic entities (CEO at Alcom Corporation, President at Capslock, Executive Board Member at Esker S.A.) Eero started his career as a Product Manager at Apple Computer in Finland in the mid-80s. Eero also owns and manages a boutique NOET Vineyards producing high-quality dry-farmed Cabernet Sauvignon.
Eero is a former Navy officer and still an avid sailor on San Francisco Bay and around the world. Eero is a very active sportsman: a 4+ tennis player, a rookie golfer, a very careful mountain biker, and an experienced (40+ years) skier, both slalom and cross-country.

This document discusses securing a Tungsten cluster with SSL. It explains what SSL is and why it is used. It then covers deploying SSL for cluster communications and for the Tungsten connector. For the cluster, SSL is enabled in tungsten.ini and certificates are generated and distributed. For the connector in proxy mode, MySQL certificates must be imported into keystores and SSL configured from the connector to the database. SSL can also be configured from the application to the connector. Successful SSL encryption is verified using tcpdump and checking the Tungsten connection status. The next steps will cover the Tungsten dashboard.

zkStudyClub - LatticeFold: A Lattice-based Folding Scheme and its Application...
Folding is a recent technique for building efficient recursive SNARKs. Several elegant folding protocols have been proposed, such as Nova, Supernova, Hypernova, Protostar, and others. However, all of them rely on an additively homomorphic commitment scheme based on discrete log, and are therefore not post-quantum secure. In this work we present LatticeFold, the first lattice-based folding protocol based on the Module SIS problem. This folding protocol naturally leads to an efficient recursive lattice-based SNARK and an efficient PCD scheme. LatticeFold supports folding low-degree relations, such as R1CS, as well as high-degree relations, such as CCS. The key challenge is to construct a secure folding protocol that works with the Ajtai commitment scheme. The difficulty, is ensuring that extracted witnesses are low norm through many rounds of folding. We present a novel technique using the sumcheck protocol to ensure that extracted witnesses are always low norm no matter how many rounds of folding are used. Our evaluation of the final proof system suggests that it is as performant as Hypernova, while providing post-quantum security.
