Three cities that are centered around places of worship are described:
1) Jakarta, Indonesia is centered around the Istiqlal Mosque, the largest mosque in Southeast Asia. It was built to commemorate Indonesian independence. In front of the mosque is Jakarta's Catholic Cathedral, representing Indonesia's religious tolerance.
2) Angkor Wat temple complex in Cambodia, stretching over 500 acres, is the largest religious structure in the world. It is the iconic temple remains of the historic Khmer empire.
3) Saint Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, Rome, is one of the largest churches in Christendom. It is located in the papal enclave and holds the burial
3. 1) ISTIQLAL MOSQUE, JAKARTA
• Istiqlal Mosque is the largest
mosque in Southest Asia in term of
capacity to accommodate people.
This national mosque of Indonesi
was build to commemorate
Indonesian independence as
nation’s gratitude for God’s
blessings. Therefore the national
mosque of Indonesia was named
“Istiqlal” an Arabic word for
“Independence”.
4. In front of Istiqlal Mosque is Jakarta’s
Catholic Cathederal. These two symbols of
Indonesia’s tolerance and co-existence.
5. 2) ANGKORWAT, CAMBODIA
• Stretching over a vast land of 500 acres,
the Angkor Wat temple complex in
Cambodia is the largest religious
structure in the world. It is UNESCO
world heritage site and icon of
Cambodia. Angkor Wat consist of
hundreds of stone temples and remains
of the Khmer empire.
6. Unlike the other Hindu Temples, Angkor Wat
faces West. Archeologist believed that
Angkor Wat is not only a temple but also a
mausoleum. The main entrance of the
Angkor Wat has rich decorations with
sculptures and carvings.
7. 3) SAINT PETER’S BASILICA
• The Saint Peter’s Basilica is an Italian
Renaissance church in Vatican City, the papal
enclave within the city of Rome. It is the most
prominent building in the Vatican City. Its
dome is a dominant feature of the skyline of
Rome. Probably the largest church in
Christendom. Catholic tradition holds that the
Basilica is the burial site of Saint Peter, one of
Christ’sApostles and also the first Pope.
