A tsunami is a series of waves caused by the displacement of water, usually in an ocean. The 2004 Indonesia tsunami was one of the most destructive, along with the 1960 Valdivia, Chile tsunami, which destroyed the city of Hilo in Hawaii. Tsunamis are caused by earthquakes, landslides, and tectonic plate collisions. Precautions include protecting homes and pets, going to higher ground, and not swimming in tsunami waters. After a tsunami, there may be aftershocks, so it is important to be careful rebuilding.
