JRuby allows developers to use the Ruby programming language on the Java Virtual Machine. It provides a solid, reliable implementation of Ruby that integrates well with existing Java libraries and tools. JRuby brings the features of Ruby like its elegant syntax to Java developers, while also bringing the large Java ecosystem to Ruby developers. It allows both communities to work together on the same platform.

CUST-6 Integrating Alfresco with Publishing Tools
In all organizations there are highly specialized tools used to produce and organize documents but integrating these with your content management platform can not only be difficult but, at times, even knowing where to start can be a great challenge. In an authoring environment integrating with these tools can make or break your CMS platform. Alfresco already includes many open source projects that help with integration; utilizing these, external tools can communicate both into and out of Alfresco to streamline authoring and publication of content. The talk will go over: Problems of authoring content outside of CMS; Highlighting common authoring tools and external systems; Demonstrating integrations to Microsoft Word, Adobe Drive, Adobe InDesign server, XML database (eXist/ MarkLogic); and Overview of integration methods with benefits and drawbacks. The talk will mainly be a presentation with some brief breakouts to run through pseudo code and show examples.

A Quick Tour of JVM Languages
This document provides an overview of JVM languages by discussing their history, reasons for creation, pros and cons of targeting the JVM, currently popular JVM languages, and common features. It notes that over 240 JVM languages have been created since 1997 to take advantage of the JVM's robustness while allowing for innovation, though the JVM was not initially designed to support certain types of languages. Popular dynamic JVM languages include Jython, JRuby, and Groovy, while Scala supports stronger typing and functional programming. Future projects may improve scripting and other language features on the JVM.

Many global organizations face similar challenges around sharing information in a timely fashion between regions; for publishers this is often exacerbated due to the size of some their assets such as print quality images or video. Alfresco, with its open extensible architecture, makes a great basis for a global enterprise content or digital asset management system yet there are still numerous challenges to tackle when implementing on a global scale. Federation is one approach that can be used successfully when the regions are generally independent in the production of content, but are producing assets that can be consumed and re-used globally. Alfresco 4.0 uses Solr and that can be leveraged to provide federated search across multiple, disparate Alfresco repositories. This session will cover how: Federated search provided remote content discovery; Share was customized to handle federated search; Intelligent storage provided eventual consistency of files; and Users could request content migration on-demand.
The Great Consolidation - Entertainment Weekly Migration Case Study - SANDcam...
The migration project involved moving content from Entertainment Weekly's WordPress and Vignette systems to Drupal. A team of 4 developers from Four Kitchens and 1 from Time Inc worked on the migration over 17 sprints from April 2014 to January 2015. Key aspects of the project included theming the site with Aurora, implementing JavaScript standards, migrating over 100,000 posts, images and terms from WordPress and Vignette, improving performance, and collaborating with Time Inc on custom content types and workflows. Testing was done to ensure the migrated site met performance standards.
EclipseCon Europe 2011
This document discusses using the Xtext framework to build an Eclipse-based integrated development environment (IDE) for digital hardware design using VHDL. It describes implementing a VHDL grammar, scoping, autocompletion, formatting and testing. Key challenges included debugging the declarative scoping approach, improving autocomplete beyond the grammar, customizing formatting, and addressing performance issues for large files. Overall Xtext provided a good starting point but significant custom work was still required to build the IDE.

Go: What's Different ?

Fast as C: How to Write Really Terrible Java
For years we’ve been told that the JVM’s amazing optimizers can take your running code and make it “fast” or “as fast as C++” or “as fast as C”…or sometimes “faster than C”. And yet we don’t often see this happen in practice, due in large part to (good and bad) development patterns that have taken hold in the Java world.
In this talk, we’ll explore the main reasons why Java code rarely runs as fast as C or C++ and how you can write really bad Java code that the JVM will do a better job of optimizing. We’ll take some popular microbenchmarks and burn them to the ground, monitoring JIT logs and assembly dumps along the way.

InvokeBinder: Fluent Programming for Method Handles
The MethodHandle API provides a powerful way to build optimized function pointers that do a wide variety of call-path adaptations. Unfortunately, the API as designed requires mental contortions to write anything more than trivial handle chains by hand. Adaptations must be made backwards from the target, argument-list modifications are done by index and length, and debugging failed adaptations can be a terrific challenge. InvokeBinder seeks to make method handles fun and easy to use by providing a fluent API, building adaptations from the call forward, allowing argument-list manipulation by name and wildcard, and much more. We'll explore everything InvokeBinder does today and talk about improvements for the future.
Over 9000: JRuby in 2015
JRuby 9000 represents the biggest-ever leap forward for JRuby. Not only have we caught up on compatibility (9000 will be 2.2-compatible from release), but we've completely redesigned our JVM-based runtime and have opened our codebase up to the JRuby+Truffle research project from Oracle Labs. The changes we've made will make it easier to keep up with MRI on compatibility and give us the potential to run Ruby as fast as Java or C. The entire Ruby world will change over the next year, and JRuby 9000 will be leading the way. We'll talk about what Ruby's going to look like once JRuby is "over 9000".

Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
