The Center for Research on Treatment of Wastewater and Hazardous Waste (CITRAR-UNI) was established in 2011 to promote research on alternative low-cost wastewater and hazardous waste treatment technologies in Peru. It treats 10 L/s of wastewater using screens, grit removal, an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor, and facultative ponds, achieving high rates of contaminant removal. Treated water is used for irrigation and aquaculture. CITRAR-UNI also conducts research projects, provides education and training, and technical advisory services related to wastewater treatment.
