1. A workingtitle
‘Believe!’
I chose thisname because it’sa one wordbrief descriptionof the narrative.The filmisabout
believinginyourself,andknowingyoucanaccomplishgreatthingsif youbelieve.Sothistitle
fitsreallywell withthe storylineinthe sense the filmsabout self-belief.
2. Lengthof film
Thisfilmwill probablybe 4-5minutes.
I thinkthisfilmwill be reallyshortas it’sgoingto have lotsof quickshotsthat will lastabout
20 secondseachso the overall filmwillendupshortbuteffective.Idon’tthinkthe film
needstobe any longeras the message will be easytopickupand not needalongfilmto get
the message across.
3. Logline
‘Yourself isyourbiggestenemy’
I’ve chosenthislogline because yourinnervoice andsub-consciousisperceivedasyour
worstenemyinthe fact it’sthe thingthat stopsyou fromdoing/completingthings,asit
makesyouself-consciousorscaredwhatotherpeople mightthinkorputunrealistic
scenariosinyourhead.Thislinkstomy filmasit’sabout a studentpickingupexamresults
but notwantingto openthemas she’dputunrealisticscenariosinherhead.
4. Introductionof keycharacters
In thisshortfilmthere onlyone maincharacterand a few people thatare seenthroughout
the filmbutnot forany more than 10 seconds. My maincharacter is goingto be an 18 year
oldgirl whois knownas the smart,geekygirl at school as she keepsupwithall herschool
workand getsher homeworkinontime.Althoughshe’sknownasthe geekshe changedthe
statusquo and hasa large friendshipgroupwhoshe lovestospendherfree time with.
Thisis whatI’m planningonmakingmymaincharacter looklike asitsgoing
to be summertime andit indicatesshe’sastudent.
5. Synopsis
It’sthe middle of augustin 2018. The mostdreadedtime of the yearfor all 18 and 16 year
oldsacross England. Resultsday!More hatedthan the firstdayof school.Butfor Abbie it
was 100% worse.
She had putso much effortintoherexams.Revising5hoursa day,everyday,making sure
she kneweverylittlesegmentof each specfrombeggingtoend.She was determinedtoget
those A*,but one thingwas stoppingher…herself-confidence.She’dneverbelievedshe
was smartenoughor couldachieve herfull potential especiallywhenit came toexams.
From the minute she steppedoutthe hall onthe lastexamshe knew she failedall of them
and scrod upher chancesof goingtoher preferreduniversity.
Act 1:
It’slaterin the day,after everyone hasalreadygone.
Abbie iswalkinginto the schoolsreceptiontopickupherresults.The receptionisthands
themoverand congratulatesherandwishesherluckforthe future.One of her teachers
popsout of nowhere wantingtoknow how she’ddone.ButAbbie wasn’twantingtotalk,so
she put herheaddownand walkedasfastas she couldoutof the school,throughthe gates
and intohercar, passingfriendsandteachersonthe way.
Act 2:
Abbie nowsits staringdownat the envelopecontemplatingwhethertoopenthem.Her
innervoice takesoverandshe throwsthe envelope ontothe passengerseatbeside her.She
nowsitsthere feelingdepressedandlikeafailure.Butstill hasn’topenedthe envelope.
She drivesoff butkeepsglancingdownatthe envelopeasIf she wantedtoopenit.
She arrived home…grabbedherresultsandran inside straighttoherroom.Tossingthe
envelopeontoherdesktothenjumpontoher bedscrollingthroughherphone trying to
ignore the massive envelope layingonher bedroomdesk.She looksupfromherphone and
glaresat it.Her phone rings it’sherbestfriendsince primary, face timingaboutplansfor
tonight.Herfriendthenasksaboutherresults.Abbie looksoveratthe envelope anddoesn’t
answer.
Abbie’s gettingreadytogo outdoingher makeupandhair.Whenshe sees the reflectionof
the envelope incornerof hermirror.She turnsaround andglaresonce more.Temptedto
openthembutresistance notto.
She arriveshome laterthateveningstill nothave openedherresultbutsits infrontof the tv
ignoringthe a majorpart of hernextstep.
Act3
She’s chattingona groupchat enjoyingthe eveninguntilsomeone asksaboutherresults.
She statesshe hasn’topenedthemyetasshe was too scared. A floodof messagescame
throughencouraging andbuildingherconfidence toopenthemastheyknow she’ddone
well.Abbieputsawayherphone andthinksabouteverythingthatwasjustsaid,she still
wasn’tconvincedbutknewshe couldn’tputitoff forever.
She ran upstairsgrabbedthe envelopeatsat staringat it,for whatseemedlike alifetime.
She tearedthe seal openandclosedhereyesas she pulledthe pieceof paperout.Slowly
openinghereyesherexpectationswere defeated!She achievedherdreamgrades.She
lookedupandsmiled.
6. Target audience
For thisshortfilmmytarget audience willbe teenswhoare completingexamsorare going
througha thoughtime where theylack self-belief. I’maimingtotargetmy filmat anyclass
as all people needencouragementatsome pointintheirlife.I’mhopingthe filmwill appeal
to bothgendersandall culturesandethnicitiesof thisage bracket.The mainclasson the
NRSscale I’m hopingtoattract withmyfilminC-E.I want these casestoengage withthe
filmbecause asthey’re atthe lowerendof the spectrumI feel like theycanbe pushedaside
as theydon’thave much moneyandare limitedtothe resourcestheycanhave.
These are imagesof typical studentsthatare about
the right age (year13) andfeminine,the type of
audience I’mgoingfor.
7. Form andstyle
WhenshootingthisshortfilmI’mplanningon havingthe lightingnatural asif it wasthe
everydayEnglishweather.Forexample Iamgoingto make the lightingall darkanddull as if
there’sbigblackcloudslike it’sabouttorain;thiswill happen whileshe’sdoubtingherself
and glaresat the envelope,butwhen she’sgotherconfidence backandhas forgotten about
the resultsitslightasif the sunhas come out frombehindthe clouds. The formatof thisfilm
wouldbe shotinthe sense thatthe audience isseeinglife throughAbbie’seyesandif were
like afriendor somethingsatinthe roomwithher.
These are examplesthe typesof lightingsI’m
goingto try and use whenfilmingmy shortfilm.
8. Marketplace
I believethis willfitintothe marketforshortfilmsonYouTube andotherrelevantplatforms
reallywell.Ithinkitwill reallyappeal toteensinthe higherendof educationinhelpingthem
believeinthemselvesandachievegreatthings.Ialsothinkitcouldbe put ontosocial media
and still be watchedbyall as everyone hastogothrough thisexperience atleastonce in
theirlife.

The mostdreadedtime of the yearfor all 18 and 16 year oldsacross England. Resultsday!More hatedthan the firstdayof school.Butfor Abbie it was 100% worse. She had putso much effortintoherexams.Revising5hoursa day,everyday,making sure she kneweverylittlesegmentof each specfrombeggingtoend.She was determinedtoget those A*,but one thingwas stoppingher…herself-confidence.She’dneverbelievedshe was smartenoughor couldachieve herfull potential especiallywhenit came toexams.

Act 1: It’slaterin the day,after everyone hasalreadygone. Abbie iswalkinginto the schoolsreceptiontopickupherresults.The receptionisthands themoverand congratulatesherandwishesherluckforthe future.One of her teachers popsout of nowhere wantingtoknow how she’ddone.ButAbbie wasn’twantingtotalk,so she put herheaddownand walkedasfastas she couldoutof the school,throughthe gates and intohercar, passingfriendsandteachersonthe way. Act 2: Abbie nowsits staringdownat the envelopecontemplatingwhethertoopenthem.Her innervoice takesoverandshe throwsthe envelope ontothe passengerseatbeside her.She nowsitsthere feelingdepressedandlikeafailure.Butstill hasn’topenedthe envelope. She drivesoff butkeepsglancingdownatthe envelopeasIf she wantedtoopenit. She arrived home…grabbedherresultsandran inside straighttoherroom.Tossingthe envelopeontoherdesktothenjumpontoher bedscrollingthroughherphone trying to ignore the massive envelope layingonher bedroomdesk.She looksupfromherphone and glaresat it.Her phone rings it’sherbestfriendsince primary, face timingaboutplansfor tonight.Herfriendthenasksaboutherresults.Abbie looksoveratthe envelope anddoesn’t answer. Abbie’s gettingreadytogo outdoingher makeupandhair.Whenshe sees the reflectionof the envelope incornerof hermirror.She turnsaround andglaresonce more.Temptedto openthembutresistance notto. She arriveshome laterthateveningstill nothave openedherresultbutsits infrontof the tv ignoringthe a majorpart of hernextstep. Act3 She’s chattingona groupchat enjoyingthe eveninguntilsomeone asksaboutherresults. She statesshe hasn’topenedthemyetasshe was too scared. A floodof messagescame throughencouraging andbuildingherconfidence toopenthemastheyknow she’ddone well.Abbieputsawayherphone andthinksabouteverythingthatwasjustsaid,she still wasn’tconvincedbutknewshe couldn’tputitoff forever. She ran upstairsgrabbedthe envelopeatsat staringat it,for whatseemedlike alifetime. She tearedthe seal openandclosedhereyesas she pulledthe pieceof paperout.Slowly openinghereyesherexpectationswere defeated!She achievedherdreamgrades.She lookedupandsmiled. 6. Target audience For thisshortfilmmytarget audience willbe teenswhoare completingexamsorare going througha thoughtime where theylack self-belief. I’maimingtotargetmy filmat anyclass as all people needencouragementatsome pointintheirlife.I’mhopingthe filmwill appeal to bothgendersandall culturesandethnicitiesof thisage bracket.The mainclasson the NRSscale I’m hopingtoattract withmyfilminC-E.I want these casestoengage withthe filmbecause asthey’re atthe lowerendof the spectrumI feel like theycanbe pushedaside as theydon’thave much moneyandare limitedtothe resourcestheycanhave.
