The Egyptian beliefs on the afterlife and burial rituals derived from the story of
Osiris, the god of the underworld. In this story Osiris was killed by his brother
Seth out of jealousy. Seth cut Osiris into pieces and scattered them across the land.
Osiris s sister gathered his body parts and brought him back to life, but Osiris was
incomplete. He was missing a body part. Because of this Osiris could no longer
rule on Earth so he was cast to the underworld. This story became deeply rooted in
the Egyptian culture. This brought about some of the earlier gods and their
central belief on there being a life after death. They also then believed that you
could only have immortality, if your body was whole and you were buried with

Egyptians quite serious and meaningful. These first burial rituals date back to the
Pre Dynastic Period. . Beginning Burial Rituals Ancient Egyptian graves date back
to the Pre Dynastic Period (5000 3100 B.C.). In this time period when someone
was buried they weren t mummified. These prehistoric burials were rectangular or
oval shaped pits dug out of the desert sand. The bodies were then inserted into the
ground usually in a fetal position, lying on their left side. The bodies of the dead

explore the New Zealand landscape through its physicality and the state of the people

turn of the nineteenth century. This is a world in transition; the clearing and trade in
kauri is shifting to that of a farming community. In contrast, Wulf is set almost a
century earlier in a time of exploration and discovery. The sailors in Clayton s story

Long before the Western countries discovered North America, the Native Americans
lived and thrived here. Historians believe these wandering peoples crossed over a
land bridge that formed when the earth froze over, officially named Beringia, to get
to North America. These nomadic Natives began spreading and forming different
tribes around North America. One of the many tribes was the AisIndians of Florida.
By themselves, the tribes reigned the New World, but contact with the Westerns
began their tragic demise. Although little is known about the origins of the Ais
Indians, historians do know that they settled around 1000 BC. The Ais Indians were
located on the Atlantic Coast of Florida, from present day Cape Canaveral to St.
Lucie. This area would have covered four counties: Brevard, Indian River, St.
Lucie, and the northern part of Martin. The Ais Indians resided in towns and
villages along the Indian River in huts. Similar to any group of people, the Ais had
a leader called the Cacique. The Cacique was determined by whom the most
respected matrilineal family was in the tribe. Unlike the traditions of the West, the
Cacique would rule through suggestion instead of force. Regarding to housing, the
huts they lived in were framed with wood or sticks, then they were covered in
palmetto leaves to form walls and a roof. As expected, the Cacique s hut was larger
